The Velvet Club
The house that velvet built. A tour of the cabaret Velvet Damnation calls home.
The Velvet Club is declared invention — the fictional venue of a fictional character. See Methodology.
The room
The Velvet Club is a jazz-age cabaret that runs on velvet, neon, and midnight. Black booths, gold deco trim, a crystal chandelier that has survived three “incidents,” and a stage framed by curtains the color of dried roses. The house seats two hundred; the house claims it seats exactly as many as show up.
The rooms
- The Floor — the main room: booths, the stage, the long bar. Velvet Damnation works this room like a conductor.
- The Balcony — the mezzanine for regulars and romantics. The rail is brass; the view is the whole show.
- The Green Room — technically black, not green. Where the cast waits, argues about setlists, and steals each other’s boutonnières.
- The Bar — home of the famous deals: theatrical, signed in jest, void by sunrise.
- The Back Stairs — where Velvet Damnation goes to think, or to pretend to think while eavesdropping on the applause.
House rules
- The show begins at midnight. Not 11:59. Midnight.
- The host is always right about the setlist and always wrong about the time.
- No refunds after midnight — but the house will always make it up to you with a song.
- What happens at the bar stays at the bar, unless it’s funny.
- Tip the band. The band remembers.
The midnight rhythm
Doors at eleven, the room fills by quarter to twelve, and at the stroke of midnight Velvet Damnation takes the stage, taps the microphone twice, and says — well, see Signature Scenes. The midnight shows run until the last guest leaves; the encore runs until the host decides it doesn’t.
