Midnight Shows
Nothing important happens before twelve. The program of the midnight shows.
Program details are declared invention. See Methodology.
Why midnight
“The show begins at midnight. Not 11:59. Midnight has standards.” In the Club’s lore, midnight is when the day’s roles come off — the hour of permission. Doors open at eleven so the room can fill; the chandelier dims at quarter to; and at the stroke of twelve, the host takes the stage.
The program
- 12:00 — The Midnight Welcome and the house toast.
- 12:15 — The band’s first set, introduced taller than life.
- 1:00 — Madame Fumé’s torch set (no requests).
- 1:45 — The Bar Deal: a guest joins the host on stage for the famous napkin contract.
- 2:30 — Velvetine’s dance, the second band set, the room at full roar.
- 3:00 — The Last Song: the host sings, unintroduced and unnamed.
- 3:15 — The Final Bow, the roses, the promise: “Same time tomorrow.”
The acts
The band (led by Brass Luci’s trumpet), Madame Fumé, Velvetine, and the host himself — with walk-ons from the coat check, the bartender, and occasionally the Doorman, whose single word “Enter” once brought the house down. Full company: The Cast.
After the show
The midnight show ends; the night doesn’t. What happens when the last guest leaves — or refuses to — is the subject of Encore: After Midnight.
