Velvet Rituals

Nightly ceremonies, observed in silence — the five rituals by which Cat Jon imposes order on the chaos of the night.

Character canon: these rituals are fictional ceremonial material for the Vizlings character — dramatized routines, not real practices. See Methodology.

Moonrise Grooming

At moonrise, wherever he is, Cat Jon grooms — paw, ear, whisker, tail, in that order, without hurry and without interruption. Staff know not to speak until the tail is done. It is hygiene as ceremony: the night gets a cat who is ready for it.

The Census

Before the club opens, the perimeter walk: bar, stage, snuggery, door, each threshold touched with one paw. He is counting the night, making sure it is all there. It always is. He checks anyway. (See the Glossary.)

The Saucer

One saucer of something dark and sweet, set beside the dais nightly and left untouched — for the gardener of the fourth life. Never explained, never skipped. Some rituals are load-bearing; this is the most load-bearing of all.

The Ninth Moon

On the full moon, the ceiling’s nine painted moons align with the real moon through the skylight. Cat Jon takes the highest shelf and grooms beneath the light while the club holds its breath. Nobody speaks until he descends. The ritual predates the club’s name.

The Closing Prowl

At closing, the empty club is walked alone: cushions checked, curtains smoothed, sleeping strays noted. Then the host’s cushion, the curl into velvet, and the club exhales. Night, secured — until moonrise.
