The Cast
The circle around the cushion — eight fictional companions, regulars, and rivals of the Velvet Club.
Madam Velvetine
A silver-furred elder who ran the cabaret of Cat Jon’s fifth life. Retired now to the Snuggery’s best alcove, where she holds court and corrects everyone’s posture. Cat Jon defers to her in all matters of glamour.
Inkpot
A small, ink-black kitten — all paws and questions — whom Cat Jon found in the club’s alley and declined to un-find. Currently learning the census route, badly.
The Bartender (Moss)
A moss-green-eyed tom who pours for strays and remembers every order across Cat Jon’s lives. Speaks rarely; when he does, the room listens. He and Cat Jon communicate largely in blinks.
Sable the Singer
A sable-furred chanteuse whose voice, Cat Jon insists, “could curdle moonlight.” Headliner of the stage three nights in seven. Their rivalry is theatrical; their friendship is not.
Pounce
A wiry young nocturnal — fast, loud, earnest. Cat Jon finds him exhausting and has quietly adopted him anyway. Handles the door on busy nights, under supervision.
The Ghost of the Balcony
A pale, translucent presence in the balcony seats — a patron from the club’s earliest nights, still attending. Cat Jon leaves a cushion for her. Nobody else acknowledges her. Everybody knows.
Doctor Whiskerly
A tweed-wearing badger (the cast is not exclusively feline) who serves as the club’s unofficial physician, archivist, and voice of reason. Keeps the timeline; Cat Jon keeps ignoring it.
The Rival ( Velvet Damnation )
A demon in a tuxedo from elsewhere in the night — stylish, dangerous, magnetic. A different character with his own site: Cat Jon’s world brushes against his, but they are not the same person, and this site never confuses them. When he visits the club, the emerald lamps burn a little lower.
