The Night Prowl

His true domain, mapped paw by paw — the route, the method, and the rules of Cat Jon's nightly walk through the midnight city.

Character canon: the prowl is fictional setting material for the Vizlings character — a dramatized routine, not a real itinerary. See Methodology.

The route

The prowl begins at the club’s door at moonrise and runs: the alley behind the theatre (first life’s ground), the library steps, the harbor wall where the ship once docked, the walled garden’s gate (never entered — only acknowledged), the cabaret’s stage door, the museum’s steps, and back to the club for opening. Seven stations, one for each life but the eighth and ninth — those he is still living.

The method

Silent paws, whiskers forward, eyes at half-mast until needed. He does not hurry; the prowl is not exercise, it is inspection. Each station is checked: thresholds touched, shadows noted, strays greeted. The city, in his view, is simply the club with the roof off, and he treats it with the same host’s responsibility.

The rules of the prowl

  1. Whiskers first. Never round a corner the whiskers haven’t cleared.
  2. Greet every stray. Information and affection both travel on four paws.
  3. Never chase. What is worth catching will wait; what runs was never his.
  4. Mark nothing, remember everything. The prowl is a census, not a conquest.
  5. Return before opening. The club’s door opens at moonrise-plus; the host is always home first.

What the prowl is for

It is how a nine-lived cat stays current: the city changes, and memory without updates becomes nostalgia. The prowl keeps his map honest. It is also, he would never admit, how he visits the garden gate — once a night, every night, without stopping. Some stations are for checking. One is for remembering.
