How this site works
Every quotation cites play, act, and scene. Dates are labeled: documented record vs. scholarly estimate, with uncertainty named, not smoothed over. Disputed points carry their owner — “scholars conclude…”, “the record shows…”, “anti-Stratfordians argue…”. Read the methodology and sources for the full picture.
Source notes
- Site concept and build pipeline adapted from the Digital Jesus reference-site template (editorial/*.md with front matter, static build, QA checks), 2026-09-26.
- Quotation texts verified against public-domain editions of the plays (First Folio text tradition via Open Source Shakespeare and Project Gutenberg editions); each entry cites play + act + scene (see methodology).
- Biographical facts: parish records of Holy Trinity, Stratford-upon-Avon; standard scholarly biographies (see sources).
- Portrait: Martin Droeshout’s 1623 engraving from the First Folio (see the image credits on this page).
