World Guide
The Astraean Reach — the invented universe where the StarTeam operates. Every place here is fictional.
Fiction note: this is a guide to an invented universe. No place, polity, or species described here is real.
The Astraean Reach
Some forty settled star systems in a loose spiral arm, bound together — barely — by the Star Concord. The Reach is the lore’s stage: old enough for history, young enough for frontiers. Travel runs through charted jump lanes; beyond the lanes lie the uncharted dark, where the Sable Nebula burns and where smugglers, prospectors, and things without names make their living. The Reach’s aesthetic is naval: brass, midnight blue, signal flags, and the compass rose — a civilization that thinks of space as an ocean and governs it like one.
The Star Concord
The fictional polity: a confederation of system governments united by a charter, a navy, and a shared calendar (Concord Years). The Concord is prosperous, bureaucratic, and — in the lore’s telling — occasionally blind to its own frontiers, which is why it needs the StarTeam. The Admiralty runs the navy; the Assembly runs the politics; the StarTeam runs the problems neither can solve.
Key worlds
Thessaly Prime
Venn’s homeworld: coastal cities, old academies, and the naval tradition that produced him. The academy’s motto — “the compass remembers” — is carved over its gates in the lore.
Karthos
A fortified border system and the site of the Kessian standoff. In the lore’s present it is a demilitarized memorial zone, patrolled jointly — the standoff’s legacy made geography.
The Verdant Expanse
A dozen colony worlds, lost to the Concord for centuries and recontacted in Operation First Light. Agrarian, independent-minded, and now the Concord’s breadbasket — and its conscience, in Selnari’s phrase.
The Sable Nebula
A stellar nursery of gas, radiation, and raw beauty — and the site of the StarTeam’s most famous rescue. Pilots speak of it the way sailors spoke of Cape Horn: with respect and a little fear.
Peoples of the Reach
- Humans — the majority population, spread across all forty systems.
- Thessians — tall, serene, long-lived; Selnari’s people, renowned as diplomats and scholars.
- Kessians — a warrior culture of the border systems, former enemies of the Concord, now uneasy neighbors; Tovak’s people.
- The Vey — a rarely-seen species of the deep dark, mentioned in the lore only in rumors — a deliberate blank left for future stories.
Technology in brief
Jump-lane travel, holographic tactical displays, energy-blade sidearms, and the Meridian’s famous speed — all standard Concord tech, pushed to the edge by Bolt’s engineering. The lore keeps technology in the background: it is the decisions that matter, not the drives. Full technical detail is on Starship & Tech.
The tone of the universe
The Reach is optimistic but not naive: a universe where courage works, institutions are flawed but fixable, and the hardest problems are solved by people who refuse to leave anyone behind. It is, in short, a universe built to deserve its commander. See Fan Guide for themes and Behind the Design for how the world was built.
