Allies & Rivals

The people who stand with the Star Commander — and the ones who stand against him. All fictional.

Fiction note: every person and faction below is invented.

The inner circle

The twelve of the StarTeam are Venn’s foundation — profiled on The Team. Beyond them, the lore gives him three kinds of allies: the crew he chose, the officers who chose him, and the enemies who became something else.

Allies

Admiral Tessa Morvain

The one flag officer who has backed the StarTeam from the rebuild onward. Morvain shields Venn from the Admiralty’s auditors and asks only one thing in return: that he keep refusing promotion, because — in the lore’s telling — “the navy needs one commander it can’t promote.” Their alliance is the lore’s political spine.

The Verdant Expanse colonies

First Light’s legacy: a dozen worlds that trust Venn personally, sometimes more than they trust the Concord. When the team needs a safe harbor, the Expanse opens its docks — no questions, in the lore’s telling, because Venn once arrived with none of his own.

Tovak’s bridge

Tovak — the Kessian defector on the team — is more than an officer; in the lore he is the living proof that the Karthos Refusal worked. Through him, the team maintains back-channel ties to Kessian border clans who remember the commander who wouldn’t shoot.

Rivals

Warlord Drevok

Leader of the Kessian Marauders, architect of the six-year war, and the only person in the lore who has out-stared Venn across a table and walked away unsatisfied. Drevok respects the Karthos Refusal and hates it in equal measure — it denied him both victory and an honorable defeat. The lore keeps their rivalry unresolved by design: two old wolves, one border, and a peace neither fully trusts.

The Admiralty auditors

Not villains but friction: the faction of the naval command that sees the StarTeam as an unaccountable expense. Venn’s three refusals of promotion are, in the lore, both principle and provocation. The auditors’ best line (fictional dialogue): “Commander, the navy cannot run on legends.” Venn’s reply, in the lore: “Then it’s fortunate we run on patrols.”

The outer-lane syndicates

Smuggler combines who profit from the dark between the jump lanes. They fear the Meridian’s speed the way sailors feared fast cutters — and, in the lore’s slyest detail, some of them quietly pay the team’s “patrol tithe,” protection money inverted: they fund the patrols that hunt them, because Venn’s patrols also rescue their ships.

The unresolved: the Vey

The deep dark’s rumor — a signal, a shadow, a name. The lore deliberately leaves the Vey undefined: the rival the stories haven’t met yet, and the reason the StarTeam’s charter reads “To answer.” See World Guide and the Missions Archive.
