The Team
Twelve specialists, one flagship, one commander. The fictional crew of the StarTeam.
Fiction note: every person below is an invented character in the fictional StarTeam universe. The StarTeam is deliberately small — a dozen specialists — because the lore’s premise is that Venn leads a rapid-response unit, not an armada.
Commander Nyra Kael — Flight Commander
Violet-skinned, sharp-tongued, and the best pilot in the Concord navy by a margin that embarrasses statisticians. Kael flies the Meridian’s interceptor wing and has saved Venn’s life often enough that she keeps count on her flight suit — he has stopped asking what the number is. Their dynamic is the lore’s favorite: she flies, he commands, and neither confuses the two jobs. “He decides where,” the lore has her say (fictional dialogue). “I decide how fast we get there.”
BOLT-7 (“Bolt”) — Chief Engineer
A stocky, ancient-pattern engineering robot who has served on eleven ships and trusts exactly one commander. Bolt speaks in work orders and keeps the Meridian running through what the lore calls “aggressive optimism and spare parts.” His relationship with Venn is the quiet heart of the crew: the commander asks Bolt what the ship needs, and Bolt — who has watched commanders ignore engineers for forty years — answers honestly, because Venn listens.
Ensign Milo Dray — Navigator
The youngest officer on the team, brilliant with charts and terrible with people. Venn personally recruited Dray after the ensign plotted a jump solution in a bar fight’s aftermath that the academy’s computers had declared impossible. Dray’s arc in the lore is learning that navigation is about people as well as stars — a lesson Venn teaches by making him deliver bad news to the crew himself.
Ambassador Selnari — Diplomat
A tall, serene alien of the Thessian line, Selnari is the team’s voice in first contact and the only person aboard who can out-wait Venn. Where Venn decides at speed, Selnari decides at depth, and the lore treats their partnership as the team’s real command structure: velocity and patience. Selnari credits Venn with the team’s diplomatic record and Venn credits Selnari with keeping him honest.
Dr. Ishan Rao — Ship’s Physician
Rao has patched the team through every mission in the archive and keeps a private log — the lore’s sly nod to the reader — of “injuries sustained while following the commander’s example.” His rule, posted in sickbay: “The commander bleeds last” — a joke, mostly, that Venn has never once found funny, because Rao means it.
The rest of the twelve
The lore names the remaining specialists more lightly, leaving room for future stories: Petty Officer Wren Okafor (communications), Lt. Cassian Voss (security), Ensign Priya Nair (science), Chief Tovak (a Kessian defector who serves as cultural liaison — the standoff’s living legacy), and two rotating specialists whose bunks are always warm. The full twelve are rarely together; the team deploys in mission groups of four to six.
How Venn leads them
The lore is consistent: Venn knows every crew member’s name, family situation, and coffee order — and claims the last of these is the most important for morale. He holds a weekly open deck where any crew member can question any decision, including his. The only rule: “Bring the compass, not the chart” — argue about purpose, not paperwork. See Abilities and Training Regimen.
Rivals and the wider cast
Those who stand against the team — Warlord Drevok, the Kessian Marauders, the smuggler syndicates of the outer lanes — are profiled on Allies & Rivals, along with the Concord Admiralty figures who alternately fund and frustrate the StarTeam.
