Behind the Design

How this site was built — the visual identity, the character-look system, and the honesty rules. The meta page.

About this page: the other twenty-two pages are in-world fiction; this one is about the real-world making of this fan reference.

The visual identity: naval command

Every character site in this project gets its own visual world; this one’s is naval command — brass, midnight blue, and parchment. The design language borrows from the age of sail filtered through science fiction: compass roses, officer’s braid, engraved chart textures in light mode; a night-watch starfield in midnight blue in dark mode. The standing rule — never one shared template look across characters — is why this site looks nothing like its siblings.

The character-look system

All eighteen illustrations on this site were generated in-house with a single fixed character description, so Venn reads as the same person on every page:

distinguished male star commander with silver-streaked dark hair and short trimmed beard, midnight-blue dress uniform with brass braid and insignia

One description, every image — that consistency is the system. Every image is captioned “AI-generated dramatization art” wherever it appears, recorded in the image credits on this page, and never presented as a real person or real photograph — because Venn isn’t one. See Sources.

The lore-building method

The fiction was built from a single seed — the card copy “head star commander” — outward: rank implies a navy, a navy implies a polity (the Star Concord), a polity implies a region (the Astraean Reach), and a commander implies a crew, a ship, and decisions worth telling. Each invention was checked against the seed: does this serve command as the character’s core? Anything that didn’t — lone-wolf heroics, superpowers, grimdark cynicism — was cut.

The honesty architecture

Three rules shaped every page:

  1. Fiction is labeled fiction. Every page carries a fiction note; Sayings labels every line; the app card copy is quoted verbatim and fenced off from invention.
  2. Nothing real is claimed. No real people, places, or events appear. The methodology (Methodology) states this plainly, and the QA checks enforce it mechanically.

What was left out

Deliberately excluded: a love interest (the lore keeps Venn’s private life respectfully vague), a tragic flaw arc (his flaw is over-responsibility, and the lore treats it as a feature), and any “chosen one” framing — Venn is distinguished by decisions, not destiny. The design’s restraint is the point.
