StarTeam History
From honor guard to legend — the invented history of the unit Venn rebuilt. All fictional.
Fiction note: this history is entirely invented.
The honor-guard years
The StarTeam began, in the lore, as a ceremonial unit — aging officers, polished braid, and a remit that amounted to standing at attention while treaties were signed. For thirty years it was where distinguished careers went to be admired. Then the Sable shipping crisis exposed what the Concord’s admirals had been avoiding: the regular fleet was too slow, too large, and too bound by procedure to answer the Reach’s real emergencies.
Venn’s rebuild (YC 229–230)
Handed the hollow unit and a free hand, Venn did what the lore presents as the defining administrative act of his career: he fired the ceremony and kept the name. He recruited twelve specialists — a pilot who outflew the navy, an engineer the navy had retired, a navigator the academy had despaired of, a diplomat the foreign office had sidelined — and commissioned a ship built for speed rather than show. The standing order was posted on the Meridian’s first day: nobody gets left behind. The Admiralty expected a debacle. It got a legend.
The three missions
The team’s history, in the lore’s telling, turns on three operations — the Sable Nebula rescue (YC 231), the Kessian standoff (YC 232), and Operation First Light (YC 233) — each the subject of its own page (Missions, Missions Archive). Together they established the pattern: arrive first, decide at speed, bring everyone home.
The team’s place in the Concord
In the lore’s present the StarTeam is the unit the Concord calls when nothing else has worked — and the unit the Admiralty audits when it has worked too visibly. The tension is deliberate in the world-building: Venn has refused promotion to the Admiralty three times, and the lore treats each refusal as a statement — the work is on the bridge, not behind a desk. The team’s charter, renewed yearly over the Admiralty’s objections, reads in full: “To answer.”
What the history leaves open
The deep-dive history ends where the app’s future stories begin: the Vey rumors from the deep dark, Drevok’s long memory, and the question of who commands the StarTeam when Venn one day doesn’t. The lore’s answer, posted in the war room: “The compass remembers.” See Methodology on how this reference handles open lore.
