Starship & Tech
The SCS Meridian — the fastest hull in the Concord navy, and the machine that makes the commander's decisions real. All fictional.
Fiction note: every ship, system, and specification below is invented.
The SCS Meridian
A long-range command cruiser, built for the StarTeam and for no one else. In the lore she is the fastest hull in the Concord navy — not the most heavily armed, not the largest, but the fastest, because Venn’s doctrine demands arrival: the commander who arrives in time rarely has to fight. Her lines are clean and naval: a midnight-blue hull with brass trim, running lights like signal lamps, and a bridge designed around a single chair with a clear view of every station.
Decks that matter
- The bridge: circular, with the command chair at the center and the great viewport forward. Every station faces inward — the design says the crew serves the decision, not the view. Venn’s standing order: the night watch may dim the lights, but never the viewport.
- The war room: dominated by the holographic tactical table where the Venn school of tactics is taught and planned. The table’s default projection, in the lore, is the compass rose.
- Engineering: Bolt’s kingdom — cramped, loud, and held together by what the chief calls “aggressive optimism.” The Meridian’s speed lives here, in drives tuned past regulation and maintained by hand.
- Sickbay: Rao’s domain, and the only deck where Venn’s authority is ceremonially suspended. The posted rule — “The commander bleeds last” — is a joke the whole ship maintains.
- The observation deck: a quiet gallery aft, where Venn walks the night watch and where, in the lore, the hardest calls are rehearsed aloud to an audience of stars.
Technology in service of command
The lore keeps tech subordinate to decisions, but the Meridian’s kit is specific:
- Aether drives (tuned): standard Concord jump-lane drives, tuned by Bolt past rated output. The speed is the weapon.
- Holographic tactical systems: the war-room table and bridge repeaters, projecting fleet positions and flare corridors in real time — the medium of the Sable rescue.
- Bridge net: the gauntlet communicators linking every officer to the command chair — Venn’s tether to the ship, and the ship’s to him.
- Energy blades: standard officer sidearms; Venn’s is unadorned but for one filed notch.
- Interceptor wing: Kael’s craft, docked ventral — the team’s fast arm, and the reason the Meridian can be in two places at once.
The ship as character
The lore treats the Meridian as the thirteenth member of the twelve-person team: she has moods (the port drive “sulks” in cold lanes), rituals (the crew touches the bridge hatch for luck before hard missions), and a reputation that precedes her — Kessian raiders, in the lore, have a name for her that translates roughly as “the ship that arrives.” A flagship worthy of the commander, and a commander worthy of the flagship.
