Costume & Gear
Every braid, button, and blade — the Star Commander's kit, piece by piece. All fictional design.
Fiction note: every item below is invented costume design for a fictional character.
The dress uniform
Midnight-blue coat, double-breasted, falling to the knee. The fabric in the lore’s telling is a matte weave that drinks light — so the brass does the shining. Rank is carried entirely in the braid: double rows of officer’s braid at the cuff, widening with seniority, terminating in the Star Commander’s device — a compass rose worked in bullion wire. No epaulettes; the Reach’s navy wears its rank at the cuff and collar, where a commander’s hands and voice are.
The insignia system
- Compass rose (collar): the StarTeam emblem, eight points, worn by every team member. Venn’s is rendered in solid brass; the crew’s in brass outline — same rose, different weight.
- Mission bars (left breast): small enamel bars for the Sable rescue, Karthos, and First Light. Three bars, in the lore’s present. The design rule: bars are earned by the team, worn by the commander — they commemorate what the crew did.
- The braid (cuffs): the Star Commander’s double row, the visual signature. In-universe, tailors say you can read a Concord officer’s entire career in the cuff; Venn’s reads as one long deployment.
Field kit
Off the parade ground, Venn wears a simplified duty uniform — same midnight blue, braid reduced to a single cord — with a practical field kit:
- Energy blade: the officer’s sidearm, worn at the left hip. Venn’s is unadorned, in the lore’s telling, except for one notch filed into the guard — the Halcyon, remembered privately.
- Compass medallion: a brass compass-like medallion worn under the uniform, a gift from his first commander. Not regulation. Never removed.
- Gauntlet communicator: a left-forearm unit linking him to the Meridian’s bridge net — the commander’s tether to the ship.
- The coat: in the field, the greatcoat. The lore’s artists love it in wind — the one theatrical indulgence the design allows.
Cosplay and fan-art notes
For builders: the uniform’s complexity is all in the braid and the rose — the coat itself is a simple naval pattern. Brass (not gold) is the correct metal tone; midnight blue (near-black in low light) is the correct cloth. The compass rose has eight points, elongated at the cardinals. The single filed notch on the blade’s guard is the detail that marks the lore-reader. See the Social Pack for reference images, all labeled AI-generated dramatization art.
