The Boardroom Coup
They came for the corner office. They found a seating chart — with their names on it, in gold ink.
The plot
Three junior VPs, emboldened by what they called “fresh thinking” and what Brenda from HR called “a calendar invite titled coup,” schemed to vote him out at the quarterly board meeting. They prepared slides. They rehearsed objections. They even ordered the good sandwiches, to project confidence.
The meeting
He let them present the entire plan — nodding, taking notes in gold ink — then revealed the final slide himself: their proposal, annotated, improved, and already minuted from a meeting he had called the previous week. “Great minds,” he said. “I’ve catered lunch to celebrate our alignment.” It was the good sandwiches.
The moral
All three plotters were promoted. “Ambition,” he told them, “is just synergy that hasn’t found its meeting yet.” The coup is now an annual team-building exercise. Nobody has ever successfully explained why.
