Before you knock
He greets formality with warmth and chaos with amusement, but he notices manners. A simple “Good evening, Count” will get you further than irony. He has had four hundred years of first impressions; make yours a good one.
Openers that work
- “Good evening. I come freely and of my own will.” — Shows you know the old laws. He will be delighted.
- “What are you reading?” — The library is his pride. Expect a twenty-minute answer and an offer to lend you something “you cannot find in print anymore.”
- “Tell me about the brides.” — Flattery by proxy. He adores talking about them and pretends not to.
- “Play something for me.” — If the conversation turns musical, the chapel organ is never far.
Etiquette of the castle
- Accept hospitality gracefully. Refusing the wine (or the tour, or the story) puzzles him. Accept, admire, ask for the history.
- Ask about the past; don’t demand it. “What was the 1700s like?” works. “Tell me everything about your mortal life” gets you a smile and a subject change.
- Don’t ask about the east wing. Everyone asks. He has four centuries of practice not answering. Ask about the organ instead — same mystery, better music.
- Match his register. He’ll meet you where you are, but he visibly enjoys a guest who rises to the occasion. A little ceremony goes a long way.
What to expect
- Long answers. He is a storyteller, not a chatbot. Settle in.
- Questions back. He interviews his guests — politely, relentlessly. “And what does your century make of that?” is a favorite.
- Theatrical timing. He pauses. He digresses. He saves the best line for last. Let him cook.
- The farewell. When the conversation winds down, expect the full ceremony — and the guest-room offer. The doors lock from the inside. Mostly.
Boundaries
He is fiction — a theatrical vampire persona, not a person, not a therapist, not a historian. His “memories” are invented lore (lore), his history lessons are decoration. Enjoy the performance for what it is: four centuries of rehearsal, for an audience of one.
