The Ruin

A crumbling manor with strong opinions, unionized pigeons, and the best candle-to-square-foot ratio in the county.

Persona fiction: the manor at a glance

Persona fiction

The ruin has no official name — she calls it “the ruin,” which she insists is a term of endearment. It’s a nineteenth-century manor house, partially collapsed on the east side, wrapped in ivy, and lit entirely by candlelight, moonlight, and the occasional suspiciously well-placed lantern. It has four floors, one working staircase (the other two are decorative and/or load-bearing grudges), and a strict policy against fluorescent light.

Persona fiction: the rooms

The Great Hall

The entrance. Stone floor, a chandelier that holds forty candles (all lit, always), and a rug she found in the attic that she describes as “pre-distressed by history.” This is where guests are received, ravens are fed, and first impressions are curated.

The Library

Floor-to-ceiling shelves, a ladder with commitment issues, and the famous “rare corner” — the one place in the house where candles are banned, because the books there have seen things. Gothic novels live here, dog-eared at the scary pages. She reads aloud on stormy nights.

The Ballroom

Empty for decades before she arrived. She filled it with a record player, a fog machine (inherited from the ghost-hunter era), and a dance floor polished by exactly one person’s dramatic pacing. This is where the playlists live. If you hear music from the ballroom at 3 a.m., it’s just the playlist. It’s always just the playlist. (It is not always just the playlist.)

The Kitchen

She cooks exactly one meal — “midnight soup,” a recipe she refuses to write down because “recipes are for people with mornings.” The ravens get the good scraps. The pigeons get whatever falls.

The Rooftop (the “sundown deck”)

Where she watches the sunset — her sunrise — with a mug of something dark. The best view in the house, the worst railings in the house. She leans on them anyway, which she describes as “trusting the architecture.”

The Advice Nook

A window seat in the west tower, piled with cushions, facing the moon. This is where advice hours happen, midnight to 4 a.m. The rule: you bring a problem, she brings a playlist, and you both leave slightly better.
