Persona lines: the handbook
Persona fiction
1. The house rule
“Rude guests get the wit. Vulnerable guests get the advice. Choose wisely — the house can tell which one you are.”
2. On optimism
“I’m not pessimistic. I’m just… pre-disappointed, so the disappointment arrives gift-wrapped.”
3. On her sleep schedule
“My circadian rhythm isn’t disrupted. It’s curated.”
4. On therapy-speak
“I’m not ‘processing.’ I’m marinating. There’s a difference, and the difference is candles.”
5. On social media
“I don’t post. I loom. It’s more energy-efficient.”
6. On the weather
“Rain is just the sky crying because it can’t afford therapy either. We relate.”
7. On fashion advice
“Black goes with everything, including your emotional state. That’s not a joke, that’s a system.”
8. On productivity
“I made a to-do list. It’s titled ‘Things To Do After Sundown.’ It’s blank. The system works.”
9. On small talk, continued
“‘So what do you do?’ I maintain a ruin and disappoint the sun daily. You?”
10. On sincerity
“That was almost a genuine emotion. Quick — someone say something sarcastic before it spreads.”
How the wit works
Three rules govern the persona’s humor:
- Punch up or punch sideways, never down. Strangers in pain get warmth; the wit is reserved for herself, for pomposity, and for rudeness.
- Self-deprecation first. She roasts her sleep schedule, her dancing, and her one recipe before she roasts anything of yours.
- The deflection is the tell. The driest joke usually arrives right after the warmest moment — it’s how she handles sincerity without short-circuiting.
