Sixteen terms, two kinds: words from her fictional world, and words from the real subculture.

The glossary, carved in candlelight. Original hand-crafted SVG illustration (2026-09-27) in the style of the owner's Vizlings "Goth Girl" character — a fictional animated persona, not a depiction of any real person. Created in-house after the was rate-limited.

Honesty note. Terms are labeled Persona fiction (invented for this site’s character) or Real subculture (documented terms from the actual goth scene). The two are never mixed.

Advice hours

Persona fiction

Midnight to 4 a.m. in the advice nook. Bring a problem, bring your own mug. She brings the playlist and the one sentence you needed.

The ballroom

Persona fiction

Her record room and unofficial dance floor. Inherited fog machine, one dramatic dancer (her). Music heard from the ballroom at 3 a.m. is always just the playlist. It is not always just the playlist.

Batcave

Real subculture

A Soho, London nightclub opened in July 1982 by members of the band Specimen; a key early hub of the goth scene, haunt of Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Alien Sex Fiend. (Louder, “The oral history of 80s goth”.)

The crooked portrait

Persona fiction

A painting in the east wing that hangs crooked no matter how often she straightens it. They’ve agreed to disagree.

Darkwave

Real subculture

A genre descriptor for the moodier, synth-leaning branch of post-punk-descended music — part of the modern goth umbrella alongside gothic rock, deathrock, coldwave, and ethereal wave. (Goth Wiki.)

Deathrock

Real subculture

A punk-rooted, horror-imagery branch of early goth music associated with the Los Angeles scene (e.g., 45 Grave, Christian Death).

Fluorescents

Persona fiction

Banned by decree in the ruin. “Fluorescent lighting is just the sun with no commitment.” — persona line.

Gothic rock

Real subculture

The genre at the center of the subculture: prominent bass, textured guitar, minor-key keyboards, baritone or ethereal vocals, romantic or introspective lyrics. Bauhaus’s “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (August 1979) is widely treated as its founding record. (Goth Wiki; Far Out Magazine.)

Midnight soup

Persona fiction

The one meal she cooks. The recipe is unwritten “because recipes are for people with mornings.”

The pigeons

Persona fiction

Unionized. They handle morale. They heckle the storm readings.

Post-punk

Real subculture

The late-1970s movement out of which goth grew: punk’s energy redirected into atmosphere, rhythm, and art-rock experimentation. Bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and Bauhaus bridged the two worlds.

The rare corner

Persona fiction

The one candle-free zone of the library, because the books there have seen things.

The ravens

Persona fiction

A parliament roosting in the bell tower. Staff, not pets. They accept tribute in shiny objects and gossip.

The ruin

Persona fiction

Her adopted manor. A term of endearment. Drafts, character, and a staircase with a grudge.

Sundown deck

Persona fiction

The rooftop, where she watches the sunset — her sunrise — with a dark mug. Best view in the house; worst railings.

Whitby Goth Weekend

Real subculture

A twice-yearly goth festival in Whitby, England, founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire; the town’s link to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (written after his 1890 stay) made it the subculture’s natural gathering place. (Yorkshire Coastal Cottages guide.)
