Six original villains, each one a dark mirror of the gold the hero wears. (All original fiction; see source notes.)
1. The Gilded Mask
The gentleman thief. Porcelain gold mask, evening dress, impeccable manners, impossible heists. He steals gold artifacts — museum pieces, Vanta vault holdings, Mile mansions — and leaves a single gold coin at every scene. The twist the hero learned in Issue #2: the Mask only steals pieces Voss looted or bought with foundry blood money, and the proceeds fund a children’s hospital in Old Aurum. The hero has caught him twice and let him go twice. Delgado pretends not to notice.
- Threat: unmatched infiltration; the Umbra Docks fencing network.
- Mirror: gold as redistribution — the question of who gold belongs to.
2. Rust — “Old Iron”
Real name: Silas Grimm. A Vanta foundryman for thirty years until a nanite-handling accident fused experimental corrosive nanites to his nervous system. Now a hulking figure of flaking, rusted metal whose touch rots aurumite channels on contact — the one thing the armor truly fears. He blames Voss, the city, and — on bad nights — the hero, for walking out of a meltdown that should have killed them both. Issue #3’s Golden Span battle nearly killed them all.
- Threat: nanite corrosion; intimate knowledge of foundry systems.
- Mirror: what the Night of First Light makes of a man the gold didn’t choose.
3. Helena Voss
CEO of Vanta Foundry. No mask, no powers — just money, lawyers, and a tower. She built Project Aurum, buried its failures, and has spent a year trying to repossess the Heart “for the city’s safety” (and her balance sheet). The file suggests she hired the sabotage that caused the meltdown — wanting a loud failure to kill the project and collect the insurance. She denies everything, on the record, with excellent counsel. Issue #7 finally corners her.
- Threat: legal ownership claims on the Heart; private security; the city’s ear.
- Mirror: gold as property — the magnate’s answer to the foundryman’s hero.
4. Blackout
Real name: Edwin Sallow, ex-Aurum Grid engineer, dishonorably dismissed after a substation fire he blames on Vanta cost-cutting. His harness emits targeted EMP bursts that kill the Umbra Cloak, blind Aurum Sight, and stall the Heart’s regulators. In Issue #4 he blacked out the entire city grid to rob the Gilded Mile blind — and the hero had to fight him drained, in the dark, as just a man in heavy plate. It worked. Barely.
- Threat: EMP; grid infrastructure knowledge; patience.
- Mirror: the city’s light, weaponized — darkness as a tool, not a cloak.
5. The Counterfeiter
Real name: Aldous Crane, a disgraced metallurgist who learned to forge false aurumite — counterfeit alloy that reads as real to scanners but poisons grid nodes and destabilizes genuine aurumite on contact. Issue #5’s quietest, cleverest villain: no battles, just a slow rot in the city’s veins that only Aurum Sight could see. He’s still at large. The hero checks the grid the way other people check the weather.
- Threat: economic and infrastructural sabotage; undetectable to conventional scans.
- Mirror: false gold — value as lie.
6. Platinum — “the Silver Answer”
Real name: Vesper Quinn, Halcyon Heights heiress, who watched the hero’s rise and saw an insult: gold is soft; silver endures. Her mirrored armor is everything his isn’t — reflective instead of light-drinking, cold instead of warm, built by the best engineers money buys. In Issue #6 she cracked his visor and nearly took the Heart, and he still refused to kill her. She took that as condescension. The rematch is the file’s open thread.
- Threat: peer-level armor; limitless funding; genuine grievance.
- Mirror: the dark reflection — what the armor looks like with no code inside it.
