Powers & Abilities
Everything the suit can do, what it costs, and the one ability he hopes never to use again. (Original fiction; see source notes.)
The core truth
Kade Mercer has no powers. The Aurum Armor has all of them, and the armor is only as strong as the cracked Heart beating in its chest. Every ability below is a system with a draw rate, a heat cost, and a failure mode. Dr. Okafor’s standing rule: “The suit is a loan. The Heart collects.”
Primary systems
Auric Strength
The aurumite channels act as artificial musculature, multiplying force along the plate’s stress lines. At full draw: roughly 40 tons of lift — enough to hold a snapping Golden Span cable (Issue #1’s aftermath, Issue #3’s centerpiece). At rest: Kade can still crack pavement if he forgets himself. He trains constantly not to use it.
Golden Pulse
Concussive blasts of hard light from the palm emitters — the suit venting Heart output as force. Dialable from “knockback” to “breach a vault door.” The pulse is golden-white and loud; subtle it is not. Overuse browns out the Umbra Cloak first, which is why he leads with fists.
Umbra Cloak
The black plate’s metamaterial skin bends visible light around the wearer. Not true invisibility — more like the eye slides off. Works best standing still, at night, against dark backgrounds (which, in Aurum City, is everywhere). Fails under EMP, under Rust nanite contact, and whenever the Heart spikes past 70% — the gold channels glow too bright to hide.
Aurum Sight
The visor reads the electromagnetic spectrum like sheet music: heat signatures through walls, stress fractures in steel, the sickly flicker of counterfeit aurumite. It’s how he found the Counterfeiter’s poisoned grid nodes in Issue #5. Side effect: migraines. He wears tinted glasses as Kade Mercer now.
Gravitic Flight
Repulsor plates in the boots and gauntlets push against the planet’s own field — silent, no exhaust, top speed around 400 km/h in a dive. He prefers to glide the updrafts between towers. The city learned to look up when the pigeons scatter.
The last resort: the Golden Hour
Push the cracked Heart past its 60% cap and it will give you everything — strength, pulse, flight, all at once, wreathed in gold fire. Okafor’s models say the crack propagates at 94% draw. At 100%, the Heart either stabilizes into something new or detonates like a small sun.
He’s done it once — Issue #8, “Golden Hour” — to stop Voss’s weaponized core. He lived. The Heart’s crack is wider now, and the gold in his visor flickers when he’s tired. He doesn’t talk about it.
Weaknesses (the honest ledger)
| Weakness | Detail |
|---|---|
| Core drain | Six hours of hard fighting empties the Heart; then he’s a man in heavy plate. The Cradle is the only charger. |
| Rust | Corrosive nanites eat aurumite channels. Contact means the gold literally rots off the suit. |
| EMP / Blackout | Kills the Cloak, blinds Aurum Sight, and can stall the Heart’s regulators. |
| The crack | Every overcharge widens it. The suit is on a clock no one can read. |
| Kade Mercer | The man inside needs sleep, food, and a life. The city doesn’t care. |
