The Hero's Code
Five tenets, written in a foundryman's hand on the Night Foundry wall. The Golden Rule. (Original fiction; see source notes.)
The Golden Rule
I. Gold protects — never hoards.
The armor is a trust, not a treasure. The Heart of Aurum could make Kade Mercer the richest man in Aurum City; instead it makes him its janitor. Voss offered millions for the Heart’s return. He keeps the wall painted instead.
II. Never take a life.
The night is dark enough without him adding to it. Not Rust, who tried to kill him. Not Platinum, who cracked his visor. Not even Voss’s mercenaries. “The day I decide who lives is the day the gold was wasted on me.”
III. The mask serves the city.
Kade Mercer stays home when the city needs the hero, and the hero stays home when Kade’s father needs a phone call. The mask is a tool with one job: Aurum City. It doesn’t get a life of its own.
IV. No one is expendable.
Not the thief, not the tycoon, not the mercenary with the EMP harness. He has pulled villains out of fires he didn’t start and carried them to paramedics who arrested them. Delgado calls it inefficient. Okafor calls it the whole point.
V. Leave every place brighter.
The Golden Hour rule: end every night having given something back — a grid node repaired, a bridge held, a kid walked home. The gold is a loan. Interest is due nightly.
The code under pressure
The file records three nights the code nearly broke: the Span (Rust begged him to let go — he didn’t), the blackout (Blackout offered a deal — he refused), and the Platinum duel (she told him mercy was condescension — he held anyway). The code isn’t a boast. It’s a load-bearing wall, and he checks it for cracks the way Okafor checks the Heart.
“The mask isn't who I am. It's what the city needs me to be.”
