Case Files

Between the issues: six short cases from the Night Foundry's files, in noir. (Original fiction; see source notes.)

NIGHT-FOUNDRY FILES — MISCELLANEOUS CASES

Case 1 — “The Gargoyle Line”

A copycat in spray-painted plate starts “patrolling” the Umbra Docks and picks a fight with actual smugglers. The hero finds him on Gargoyle Row, talks him down off a ledge, and Okafor confiscates the paint. Delgado’s note: “Copycat retired. Told him the city only needs one gold idiot.”

Case 2 — “The Hum”

Residents of Old Aurum report a humming from the storm drains. It’s the Cradle’s harmonics, leaking through old brick. The crew spends a week re-seating the housing with foundry felt. Danny names the frequency “the city’s lullaby.” Nobody corrects him.

Case 3 — “The Coin”

A Gilded Mask coin turns up in a pawn shop with a forged provenance — someone’s counterfeiting the calling card. The trail leads to a Mile fence; the hero leans on him (gently, by his standards); the fence retires. The Mask leaves a real coin on the hero’s gargoyle the next night. No note. None needed.

Case 4 — “The Cold Open”

Winter. The Heart runs 4% hotter in the cold and the Umbra Cloak keeps icing at the edges — a glittering outline, the opposite of stealth. Okafor’s fix: fly lower, slower, and “stop showing off.” The pigeons disagree about the showing off.

Case 5 — “The Interview”

Nadia Ferreira stakes out Gargoyle Row for eleven nights with a thermos and a long lens. On night eleven the hero lands, considers her for a long moment, and says: “You’re good at this. Keep being good at this.” Then he’s gone. Her piece the next morning is the fairest thing ever written about him. She never got the interview. She got something better.

Case 6 — “The Promise”

A kid on Foundry Row — nine, fearless — asks the gold figure if the bridge will hold. The hero kneels, plating creaking, and says it will. The next night he personally inspects every suspender cable on the Golden Span with Aurum Sight, in the rain, for six hours. “Every bridge I hold up,” the log reads, “is a promise I intend to keep.”
