Allies
Four people know the secret. A city full of people keeps it. The allies dossier. (Original fiction; see source notes.)
Dr. Imara Okafor — the Armorer
Vanta Foundry’s junior reactor engineer — the only person on Project Aurum who questioned the containment math out loud, and the only one who didn’t sign the settlement. She found Kade three nights after the meltdown, trying to weld aurumite with a hardware-store torch, and brought better tools instead of calling security. She rebuilt the Mark II, maintains the Cradle, and writes the maintenance log in the driest hand in Aurum City. She has never worn the armor. She has threatened, twice, to take it away from him. He believes her.
Detective Rosa Delgado — the Shield
Aurum PD, Major Crimes. Twenty years on the force, eleven in the Umbra Docks precinct. She figured out the secret in month two — “a metallurgist with your build doesn’t get that good at disappearing” — and made a detective’s bargain: she doesn’t ask, he doesn’t make her precinct look foolish, and the standing order reads do not pursue the gold figure unless he’s pursuing someone else. She has covered for him, lied for him once (she counts), and saved his life on the Golden Span when Rust had him corroded and grounded.
“Spark” — Danny Reyes — the Sidekick
Sixteen. Bike courier in Old Aurum. Found the Night Foundry by following a humming sound through a storm drain — because of course he did. Kade’s first instinct was to scare him off; Okafor’s was to put him to work. Now Danny trains in a cobbled-together junior rig (salvaged Mark I plates, gold trim, hot-swapped aurumite cells, no Heart), runs daylight recon, and has the best rooftop routes in the city. Codename Spark — “because I’m the part that catches,” he says. The file notes, dryly: Do not tell Voss. Do not tell his mother. (His mother knows.)
The Night Foundry crew
Retired foundrymen — Kade’s father’s generation — who maintain the gargoyle lines, watch the Cradle’s perimeter, and run the best rumor network in Aurum City. They call the hero “the kid in the good suit” and Kade “the kid,” and the distinction matters to them. None of them will ever talk. Several of them have been asked, by very serious men, with very serious money.
Nadia Ferreira — the Witness
Does not know the secret. Crime reporter for the Aurum Gazette, and the city’s most honest chronicler of the gold figure — she writes what she sees, flags what she can’t verify, and has twice killed her own paper’s exaggerations. The hero reads her the way other people read weather reports. She wants the interview of the century. She’ll never get it. She keeps writing anyway.
