Workshop tour
Welcome to Rivet's repair shop. Wipe your feet on the mat (it says WELCOME in punch-card dots), and keep your fingers clear of the soldering station. Tour starts at the counter.
Stop 1 · The repair counter
A long steel counter, polished by a decade of elbows. The tip jar reads TIPS ACCEPTED IN BATTERIES. Behind it, a pegboard of screwdrivers arranged by size, mood, and "vibes." The sign above: WALK-INS WELCOME. CARRY-INS ALSO FINE.
Rivet's diagnostic ritual: he listens to your gadget like a seashell, nods sagely, and announces the problem before you've finished describing it. He's right about 60% of the time. The other 40%, the gadget fixes itself out of embarrassment.
Stop 2 · The floppy library
Floor-to-ceiling shoeboxes, each labeled in blocky handwriting: FRIENDSHIP_01 through FRIENDSHIP_47, JOKEBACKUP, SLEEP.SYS. Borrowing is free; the only rule is return it with a story. The catalog is a single index card: ASK RIVET, HE REMEMBERS. He does.
Stop 3 · The retirement shelf
Rescued machines living out their days in comfort. Dotty the dot-matrix printer (prints banners, very slowly, meditatively). A 1974 toaster (the first customer, still a regular). A microwave-sized Tamagotchi (fed daily, loved unconditionally). A small brass plaque reads: NONE OF THESE ARE DEAD. ALL OF THESE ARE LOVED.
Stop 4 · Standby corner
A cozy armchair, a blanket woven from punch cards, and a lamp that is always on. This is where defrag naps happen. Visitors are welcome to nap too — Rivet will tuck you in and stand guard, which mostly means standing nearby whirring setting one.
Stop 5 · The roof (staff only, but you're staff now)
Up the ladder, past the antenna farm, is the best view in Robits: the whole workshop district blinking at golden hour. Rivet comes up here after hard repairs. "Everything looks fixable from up here," he says. He's right.
