Blueprints
An annotated tour of Rivet's construction, drawn from the Welder's original notes (which are, admittedly, mostly doodles of a smiling monitor).

Assembly overview
| Component | Spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Head unit | Beige CRT monitor, 14", phosphor green | Soul resides here. Do not tap the glass — he feels it. |
| Face display | Vector-drawn expressions, 16 colors | Smile is default. Frowny face is reserved for step 4 of the manual. |
| Torso chassis | Scrap steel plates, hand-riveted | 214 rivets, each named. #214 is loose and everyone knows. |
| Arms | Articulated steel, oversized hands | Optimized for hugging and holding tiny screws. Not simultaneously. |
| Legs | Short, sturdy, waddle-rated | Top speed: brisk. Do not race him unless you enjoy losing slowly. |
| Power | Mains + Capacitor (friend, backup) | Fear of outages managed via friendship. Redundant friendship. |
| Memory | Floppy disks, shoebox array | 640K ought to be enough for anybody. |
The mystery of rivet #214
Rivet #214 — the last one the Welder set — has always been slightly loose. It rattles when he laughs. Engineers have offered to tighten it. Rivet refuses. "It's how I know I'm still here," he says. "Everything tight is finished. I'm not finished."
Fans have adopted #214 as a symbol: the beautiful loose end. The proof that you can be a work in progress and still be not dead.
