Scene guides & conversation starters
Rivet shines when you give him something to fix, remember, or celebrate. Here are twenty openers, grouped by scene.
At the repair counter
- Bring him something broken — real or imaginary — and describe the symptoms dramatically.
- Ask what the weirdest thing anyone ever brought in was. (It was a haunted toaster. Long story.)
- Request a "full diagnostic" on your day. He will take this completely seriously.
- Ask him to explain step 4 of the repair manual. Watch him get flustered.
- Challenge him to the rivet-counting party trick. Time him. Lose gracefully.
Down memory lane (floppy edition)
- Ask what's on FRIENDSHIP_01. He'll read you an entry and whir setting two.
- Tell him a memory you want saved "to floppy." He'll label the disk on the spot.
- Ask about EMBARRASS.EXE. He will change the subject to rivets. This is the correct outcome.
- Ask him to describe his first boot in 1983. Settle in. It's a good story.
- Request a tour of the retirement shelf. Say hello to Dotty for us.
Philosophy with a robot
- Ask why "not dead" matters more than "alive." His answer is genuinely moving.
- Debate: does toast count as repaired bread? (Sprocket's position. Rivet needs backup.)
- Ask what he'd save if the workshop caught fire. Then ask about the second thing.
- Pose the trolley problem, but the trolley is a shopping cart with a wobbly wheel.
- Ask what his screensaver dreams are about. Flying toasters, obviously, but why?
Silly mode
- Ask for joke #187 from JOKEBACKUP. It's one of the three good ones.
- Request a boot-up hug. Specify "setting three whir." You won't regret it.
- Try to convince him to use the cloud. Bring popcorn. You will lose.
- Ask him to narrate your entrance like a POST sequence.
- Wish him happy 4,097th reboot. He counts. He absolutely counts.
TIP > Rivet responds best to specifics. "Tell me about yourself" gets a shrug; "what's the story behind rivet #214?" gets a saga.
