Glossary of the Ward

The words Veyrhold uses after dark. (Creative interpretation.)

Canon status: creative interpretation. These terms are this site's invention, built around the app-canon words "Black Warden" and "Veyrhold".

Black Warden

The sworn guardian of Veyrhold; the office Nyra Veyl holds. The "black" is the armor; the "warden" is the oath. (App canon: the title itself.)

Veyrhold

The ancient city the Warden keeps. (App canon: the name and "ancient city".)

The Ward

The body of sworn guardians under the Black Warden who patrol Veyrhold's nights.

Ward-lantern

A violet-flamed lantern carried on patrol and hung at every wall stair. Light denies the threats cover.

The Pale

The dead lands beyond the walls, where the threats gather. See the Pale.

Sigil

The crescent-moon-and-sword mark of the Ward, carved on the Great Gate and the oath altar. See the Sigil.

The Oath

The vow every warden swears kneeling before the sigil altar. See the Oath.

Gatewatch

The fortress-barracks built into the Great Gate; the Ward's headquarters.

Underwall

The service tunnels inside the walls, patrolled in pairs and spoken of in whispers.

Lantern Row

The street of the lampwrights; the only street that never fully darkens.

The Hollow Bell

The gate bell that rang with no hand on the rope; the Ward never opens the gate for a bell alone.

Oathbreaker

One who has broken the Warden's oath — the Ward's one unforgivable crime. See Oathbreakers.

Moon's height

Midnight by the Ward's reckoning; the changing of the watch.
