The known threats

Gloomhounds

Pack hunters of smoke and chitin that run the treeline on moonless nights. Their eyes burn violet — the Ward's standing joke is that they stole the color from the oath.

The Hollow

Not a creature but a condition: travelers who wander too far into the Pale and come back wrong — empty-eyed, silent, still wearing their own faces. Wardens are ordered not to engage, only to escort them to the gate and bar it.

Thornwraiths

What the dead forest makes of the unburied. They do not cross running water or lit thresholds, which is why the ward-lanterns burn at every wall stair.

The Murmuring

A sound, not a thing — heard in the Underwall tunnels when the moon is dark. Veteran wardens claim it is the city remembering every siege. Recruits are told not to answer it.

How the Ward answers

Lanterns, in pairs, and the Warden's sword. The Ward's doctrine is simple: light denies them cover, numbers deny them courage, and Nyra denies them the gate. See the Ward for patrol doctrine.
