Starship and Tech
The SS Starlume and the tech of the StarTeam universe — ships, gates, weave, and the gadgets Flick Marn swears at daily.
The SS Starlume
The StarTeam’s fast cruiser is Neris’s primary posting — and yes, it’s named for her. Officially the name honors “the starlight that guides the lost.” Unofficially, Lyra confirms Neris suggested it, Veyne approved it, and Neris denies everything.
Class: Kestrel-class fast cruiser, refit for rescue operations. Crew: 40. Notable features:
- The observation blister: a glass-domed lounge on the dorsal hull where Neris spends her off-hours. The crew calls it “the violet room” because she glows in her sleep when she’s tired.
- The launch bay: configured for starflight deployment — Neris doesn’t need a shuttle, so the bay has a dedicated “drop chute” she dives out of at speed. The first time she used it, Jax screamed. He still screams, quieter now.
- The medbay annex: Osei’s forward clinic, stocked for energy-wielder crashes. Neris has her own cot. It’s the most-used cot on the ship.
- Flick’s workshop corner: technically against regulations, practically indispensable. Smells of ozone and chocolate.
StarTeam technology
Relay gates: the fast-travel network. Fixed gates sling ships between systems; the Relay Keepers maintain them and charge everyone equally, including the Ashen. Neris once outran a gate transit on starflight over a short hop. Lyra has never forgiven the smugness.
Energy-weave: Flick’s signature material — fabric threaded with starlight filaments. Beyond Neris’s suit, it’s used in rescue blankets, hull patches, and Jax’s favorite gun sling. Flick’s workshop produces it in small batches; the weave “takes” differently for each wielder, which is why every suit is custom.
Holographic charting: the Veil Nebula’s shifting dust seas require live 3D charts. Neris’s energy sense makes her a natural chart-runner — she feels the density shifts before the instruments log them. Her parents’ old guild still uses her childhood prediction logs as training data.
Dampener-scramblers: Flick’s countermeasure to Ashen dampers — belt-worn devices that retune the Starweave faster than the dampers can tangle it. Neris field-tested the first prototype by walking into a damper field on purpose. Osei’s incident report is one sentence: “She’s fine. I’m not.”
Ashen technology
The Voidfleet’s tech is the dark mirror: star-farming rigs that siphon stellar output, eclipse engines that block starlight at scale, and dampers that tangle wielder energy. It’s powerful, ugly, and — the StarTeam’s engineers insist — inelegant. Flick’s professional opinion: “They’re burning a library to heat a shed.”
The arms race between Ashen dampers and Flick’s scramblers is the quiet war underneath the loud one — and Neris, as the most powerful wielder alive, is both its prize and its test pilot.
The tech philosophy
The StarTeam universe draws a deliberate line: StarTeam tech extends people (the weave channels, the medbay heals, the gates connect), while Ashen tech consumes things (stars, wielders, worlds). Neris sits exactly on the line — a person the Ashen want to turn into fuel, flying for the crew that refuses to. The tech isn’t just set dressing; it’s the argument.
