StarTeam History
Before the violet girl — how Captain Veyne built the StarTeam, and the war that shaped the crew Neris joined.
The founding (Cycle ~1127)
Captain Ilsa Veyne founded the StarTeam twenty years before Neris’s birth, after resigning her stellar-cartography commission in protest — the Charter had refused rescue aid to a colony she had personally charted. Her founding principle, still painted on Astraea Prime’s docking bay: “Nobody is too far.”
The first crew was five people and one mortgaged cruiser. Their first mission was a medevac. Their second was a medevac. Their third was a bar fight that Veyne insists was “diplomacy.”
The early years (1127–1145)
The StarTeam built its reputation the slow way: showing up. Disaster relief, lost-ship recovery, plague quarantines, one memorable incident involving a runaway terraforming engine and Jax’s predecessor’s very brave tractor beam. By Cycle 1140 they were the Charter’s unofficial rapid-response crew — underfunded, overworked, and beloved.
The Ashen war begins (1145–1155)
The Ashen Voidfleet’s star-farming operations escalated from fringe piracy to open war. The StarTeam, never designed as a military unit, found itself the only force willing to stand between the Ashen and the outer colonies. They adapted: Flick weaponized the energy-weave, Lyra’s interceptors got teeth, and Veyne — cartographer turned commander — proved uncomfortably good at war.
The war’s defining early battle was the Hollow Reach evacuation (1151), where the StarTeam extracted 12,000 civilians under fire. Osei joined the crew that year, after treating the wounded in a field tent for nine days straight and then refusing to leave.
The Kindling’s shadow (1147–1161)
Unknown to the team, the Kindling of 1147 had already planted the war’s strangest seed: a star-hearted infant on Port Selene. The Ashen learned of it first — their deep-nebula sensors caught the energy signature. For fourteen years, both sides watched and waited: the Ashen planning acquisition, Veyne (once Osei’s quiet reports reached her) planning something else entirely.
The Reckoning and after (1164–1167)
Neris’s arrival changed the StarTeam’s shape. A rescue crew with a living star on the roster became, in Osei’s words, “something people write songs about” — which brought funding, recruits, political attention, and Kael Drax’s personal obsession. The Eclipse Siege of 1167 was the war’s turning point: the Ashen’s superweapon destroyed, their advance broken, their commander humiliated by a sixteen-year-old.
The Quiet Years (1168–present)
The current era: patrols, diplomacy (the Kestrel Accords), the dampener arms race, and Drax’s eight silent months. The StarTeam is bigger than it’s ever been and more uncertain than it’s ever been. Veyne, asked recently what the team’s mission is now, said: “Same as always. Nobody is too far. We just have further to go.”
Why the history matters to Neris
Neris didn’t join a team; she joined a story already in progress — one that had been waiting for her since before she was born. The history page exists so her arc reads correctly: not a chosen one dropped into a vacuum, but a kid stepping into a crew that had spent twenty years becoming the kind of people who would refuse to make her a weapon.
