Lore: The Backstory
From the Kindling that marked her as an infant to the siege that made her a hero — the complete in-world backstory of Neris Sen.
Port Selene, Cycle 1147
Neris Sen was born on Port Selene, an orbital ring-city drifting above the nebula world Veyra. Her parents, Kara and Tomas Sen, were cartographers of the Veil Nebula — mappers of the violet dust seas that made the system beautiful and dangerous in equal measure.
In the year of her birth, the nebula did something it had never done in recorded history: it reached back. A stardust storm of impossible density — later named the Kindling — tore through the station’s shielding for seventeen minutes. Instruments failed. Windows fogged with light. And when the storm passed, infant Neris slept in her cradle with a fragment of collapsed star fused over her heart, pulsing like a second heartbeat in violet.
Dr. Amara Osei, then a young field medic, was the first to examine her. Her field notes — preserved in the StarTeam archives — describe it simply: “The light is part of her now. Whatever it is, it chose her, not the other way around.”
Kara and Tomas hid what they could. The colony’s council classified the Kindling report. Neris grew up a bright, restless kid who broke curfew to stare at the nebula and asked her parents, more than once, why her chest sometimes felt warm when the stars came out.
The Awakening, Cycle 1161
Neris was fourteen the night it happened. A school astronomy project had her in the Port Selene observatory dome past midnight, logging nebula drift. The Starheart Core — dormant for fourteen years — surged in response to a solar flare ricocheting off the Veil Nebula.
The dome’s ceiling is still gone. The official incident report calls it “catastrophic emitter failure.” The witness statements, twelve students and one terrified instructor, all say the same thing: the girl in the middle of the dome caught fire with starlight and rose ten feet off the floor, and the stars came down to meet her.
Neris remembers it differently: “It didn’t hurt. It was like remembering something I’d forgotten before I was born.”
The year of hiding
For a year, Port Selene tried to keep her a secret, and failed spectacularly. Energy merchants from the Ashen Voidfleet started asking questions in the markets. Three different off-world “schools” sent recruiters. Her parents received offers — some generous, some threatening — from five star systems.
Neris, meanwhile, was learning the hard way that the Starheart Core had no manual. She set a storage shed on fire. She levitated the family skimmer. She blacked out for six hours after trying to stop a falling cargo crane — and woke up with the Crane’s shadow burned into the dock floor in a ring of violet.
Dr. Osei, who had never stopped checking on the Kindling child, quietly sent word off-world: she needs training, not protection. And she needs it before the wrong people make the offer.
The Reckoning, Cycle 1164
The Voidfleet came for Port Selene in Cycle 1164. Their commander, Kael Drax, had decided the Starheart Core would power the Ashen’s new war engine — and he was done asking politely.
His raiders hit the docks at dawn. Port Selene’s defense grid lasted eleven minutes. And then fifteen-year-old Neris Sen, who had exactly six months of self-taught control and no plan, stood on the broken dock ring and refused to move.
The StarTeam arrived forty minutes later — Captain Ilsa Veyne’s cruiser burning in from the relay gate. What they found was a smoking dock, three disabled Voidfleet skiffs, one crater shaped like a starburst, and a teenager sitting in the middle of it, crying, glowing, and very much alive.
Veyne’s after-action report contains the sentence that changed Neris’s life: “She held the line alone. Whatever she is, she is not a weapon yet. Let’s keep it that way.”
Joining the StarTeam, Cycle 1165
Veyne made Neris an offer no one else had: training without ownership. Join the StarTeam as a trainee. Learn to control the Core. Keep her name, her choices, and — Veyne’s non-negotiable condition — her childhood. The first year was brutal: control drills, energy-discipline, tactical education, and the slow realization that being the strongest person in the room mostly meant being the most tired.
She bonded fast. Jax Corvane appointed himself her big brother within a week. Lyra Dask challenged her to a race before she’d finished unpacking. Flick Marn took one look at her energy signature and started building the gear that would become her costume’s energy-weave. And Dr. Osei — who’d followed her own advice and joined the StarTeam as chief medic — finally got to do the careful study she’d wanted since the Kindling.
The Eclipse Siege, Cycle 1167
In Cycle 1167, the Ashen Voidfleet attempted to eclipse Veyra’s sun — to blot out the star-system’s light and starve the StarTeam’s energy-wielders of power. It was Neris’s first operation as a full StarTeam member, and it nearly killed her.
The plan required someone to fly into the eclipse engine’s corona and detonate it from inside. The only wielder who could survive the heat was the one whose heart was literally a star. Neris volunteered before Veyne finished explaining.
She survived. The details are in Missions Archive — but the short version: she flew into a star’s corpse, held a shield of woven starlight around herself for eleven seconds, and punched the Violet Starweave straight through an engine the size of a moon. When the Ashen fleet retreated, their commander broadcast a message on an open channel, addressed to her personally: “Sen. You and I are not finished.”
The Quiet Years, Cycle 1168–present
Since the Siege, Neris has been the StarTeam’s frontline energy-wielder: patrols, rescues, diplomatic escorts, and the slow war of nerves with Kael Drax. She’s seventeen now — stronger, warier, funnier than she was. She still breaks curfew to stare at the nebula.
Her arc is deliberately unfinished. That’s the point of a coming-of-age hero: the girl who held the docks alone is still becoming the heroine who can hold a whole sky. The site Fan Guide has theories about where it goes next.
