The founders, the family, the foundry partner, and the lieutenants.
Co-founders
Chris Malachowsky
Sun Microsystems engineer who co-founded NVIDIA with Huang and Curtis Priem in April 1993. A hardware technologist by background, Malachowsky stayed with NVIDIA for decades as a senior technical leader — the quiet counterpart to Huang’s public role.
Curtis Priem
Graphics architect (IBM, Sun; a designer of the GX graphics chip) who completed the founding trio. Priem left NVIDIA in the early 2000s and became a noted philanthropist, including major gifts to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, his alma mater.
Family
Lori Huang (née Mills)
Huang’s wife. They met as engineering students at Oregon State University, where she was his lab partner — a detail Huang has mentioned in interviews. In October 2022, Jensen and Lori Huang jointly donated $50 million to Oregon State University, the school’s largest gift at the time, funding the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex.
The couple have two children and have kept their family life largely out of the press.
The foundry partner
Morris Chang
Founder of TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), the foundry that has manufactured NVIDIA’s chips since the 1990s. Huang has spoken of Chang with open admiration — describing him as a mentor figure and a model of long-term thinking — and the two are known to meet socially, including widely reported dinners during Huang’s visits to Taiwan. The NVIDIA–TSMC relationship is one of the most consequential partnerships in the history of technology: a fabless designer and a pure-play foundry, rising together.
NVIDIA leadership
Colette Kress
NVIDIA’s chief financial officer since 2013. A veteran of Cisco and Microsoft, Kress has steered the company’s finances through the data-center pivot and the AI boom — the steady financial hand behind Huang’s big bets.
Ian Buck
The Stanford researcher whose work on general-purpose GPU computing helped inspire CUDA; he joined NVIDIA and became the driving technical force behind the CUDA software platform. Often described as the “father of CUDA” in industry coverage.
The extended circle
- Sequoia Capital / Sutter Hill Ventures — early venture backers of NVIDIA (1993–94 era).
- Sega — the game-console partner whose collapsed contract nearly killed NVIDIA, and whose reported $5 million payment (see The GPU revolution) funded its survival.
- Government partners — in the AI era, Huang has met heads of state and ministers worldwide (India, Vietnam, the Gulf states, the UK, and others) pitching “sovereign AI”: national AI infrastructure built on NVIDIA hardware. These relationships are commercial and diplomatic, and they are covered as reported events, not endorsements.

Relationships and roles draw on NVIDIA’s corporate disclosures, Oregon State University’s gift announcement (October 2022), contemporaneous press coverage of state visits and GTC appearances, and profiles of the individuals named. Characterizations of personal relationships (e.g., the Huang–Chang rapport) are reported in press coverage, not confirmed by the individuals.
