- Twenty years back
Born Cassidy Maren Brooks in Dustwater, Redstone Territory. Her mother runs the general store; her father drives freight. She learns to braid rope before she can spell. - Age 9
The spring flood takes the Dustwater stage on the Salt River. Trail boss Gideon Voss gets the coach across with a lantern and a memory — and Cassidy decides she’ll be that memory. - Age 14
Apprenticed to Gideon Voss. Learns the fording line, the rim checks, the water holes, and the code: ride straight, get folks home. - Age 17
First solo guiding run: Dustwater to Copper Flats, a family of five, through Red Wash in a dust storm. Everybody arrives. Nobody’s late for supper. - Age 21
Finds a wild dun filly trapped in a Red Wash box canyon. Frees her, names her Juniper, and has never ridden another horse since. - Age 24
Maps the ventilation shafts of Ghost Mesa “as a lark, and because Voss told me a scout maps everything twice.” The map saves a survey crew years later. - Age 26
