The Salt River Crossing
Flood season, a stranded stagecoach, sixteen passengers, one fording line. Fictional adventure.
Salt River — flood season, dawn
The stage went in at the far bank crossing at dusk and stuck fast in the gravel — water rising, sixteen passengers, a driver with a broken arm, and the river doing what the Salt River does in spring: getting meaner by the hour.
Cassidy rode in before first light with Wren — then thirteen — holding the spare rope. She read the water the way she’d been taught: the old fording line, a gravel ridge her mother’s generation had walked and her generation had nearly forgotten. She tied her mother’s red bandana into a sling for the driver’s arm, strung the guide rope across the ridge, and walked Juniper into the current first.
One by one, sixteen people crossed on that rope — the last of them a girl of six riding pillion behind Cassidy, laughing at the spray. The coach was lost to the river. Nobody in it was. “The river takes what it’s owed,” Cassidy said on the far bank. “It wasn’t owed them.”
