The High Noon Duel at Dustwater
The most talked-about showdown in territory history — and the one where nobody bled. Fictional adventure.
High noon — Dustwater
Cole Tanner rode into Dustwater at eleven-forty with a grudge against the bank and a reputation that walked in five minutes ahead of him. He’d come to settle Silas Vane’s debt men — his words — and the street emptied the way streets do when a Tanner’s in a mood.
Cassidy stepped off the boardwalk at eleven-fifty-five. Not with a gun. She doesn’t carry one. She stood in the middle of Main Street with her lariat loose in her hand and said, loud enough for the whole town to hear: “Cole. You draw on that bank, the marshal hangs you. You draw on me, I’ll be disappointed. Walk away and I’ll buy the coffee.”
He drew anyway — pride’s a faster thing than sense. Her loop was already in the air. The lariat took the pistol out of his hand at twelve feet and set it spinning into the dust like a dropped promise. Then she walked up, handed him his gun back butt-first, and said: “Coffee’s getting cold.”
Marshal Kincaid arrested nobody. Doc Merritt says it was the finest roping he ever saw. Cole Tanner drank the coffee, and — according to Wren, who was watching from the forge — he laughed for the first time in years.
