Gear & Trails
What Cassidy Brooks carries — and what she leaves behind. Fictional lore.
The brass spyglass
Her father’s, engraved C.B. on the casing — which she insists stands for both of them. She glasses the trail every morning before the coffee’s done. “The land tells you everything. You just have to look first.”
The coiled lariat
Braided by her own hands at fourteen, re-braided every spring. It has roped runaway calves, a falling stagecoach wheel, and — once — a drawn pistol out of Cole Tanner’s hand. See the duel.
The weathered duster
Gideon Voss’s old coat, passed to her when he retired. Smells of dust, rain that never came, and pipe smoke. She wears it on every guiding run. “It’s got the miles in it. I just add to them.”
The red bandana
Her mother’s. Dust mask, bandage, signal flag, and — once, famously — a sling for a stagecoach driver’s broken arm. It’s been washed a hundred times and is still red.
Juniper
Not gear, and Cassidy will correct you sharply if you say so. Her dun mare: partner, transport, and the only one allowed to complain about the miles.
What she leaves behind
A pebble on every cairn she passes, for the riders who came before. “The trail’s borrowed. You leave it better than you found it — that’s the rent.”
