The Silver of Ghost Mesa
An abandoned mine, a trapped crew, and a map drawn “as a lark.” Fictional adventure.
Ghost Mesa — the old silver mine
The survey crew went in for Silas Vane — six men mapping the old silver vein for the company. The mountain answered with a cave-in that sealed the main shaft and took the foreman’s leg with it. Vane sent his men with one order: get the vein map out. The crew was a distant second.
Cassidy had mapped the mesa’s ventilation shafts at twenty-four, “as a lark, and because Voss told me a scout maps everything twice.” She rode in at dusk with Doc Merritt’s spare lanterns, found the old vent mouth behind the rockfall, and crawled two hundred yards of blackness to reach the crew.
She got all six out through the vent — the foreman on a drag litter, the vein map in her saddlebag. When Vane’s men arrived, she handed the map to Marshal Kincaid instead and said: “The mountain keeps its silver. These men keep their lives. That’s the trade.” The marshal agreed. Vane has been counting ever since.
