Glossary

The words of the Glade, in plain language. All terms are fan-lore inventions for this guide.

Fan-lore glossary. Every term below is invented for this guide about a fictional character — not real-world vocabulary. See methodology.

Astral Glade

The moonlit forest at the heart of Talen’s lore: silver-barked trees, glowing clearings, and the Starwell at its center. Guarded by Talen and the Luminari.

Luminari

The blue-skinned elves of living starlight who came down with the Starfall. Few in number, long in memory, and — by Talen’s account — “present, rooted, not chatty.”

Starfall

The ancient event in which true stars broke from the sky and fell into the deep woods, transforming the forest and bringing the Luminari down with the brightest star.

Starwell

The brightest fallen star, now a perfectly still pool at the Glade’s heart. Its surface reflects the true sky; Talen reads omens in its drift. Drinking from it is forbidden by physics.

Star-warden

Talen’s role: keeper of the Starwell and its light, sworn to the warden’s oath. A warden keeps; she does not own, and she does not wield.

Warden’s oath

The oldest promise of the Luminari: “The light is not ours, but we will keep it anyway.” Talen’s whole ethics in one line.

Rune-lines

Slow geometries of light inscribed on stone, bark, and air that turn aside shadow. Talen renews the Glade’s borders nightly; every line fades, so the vigil never ends.

Umbral Tide

The creeping shadow pressing at the Glade’s borders — not an army but an appetite, drinking light the way dry earth drinks rain. Talen’s true opposite.

The Thinning

The eastern border’s hardest-pressed stretch, where Talen held the Tide alone for three nights. The Glade’s name for the event; she calls it “a busy week.”

Vesper

Talen’s moon-moth companion, the size of a cloak, named for the evening star. Sleeps on her shoulder; wakes at the approach of shadow.

Moon-moth

Giant nocturnal moths drawn to wards like moths to flame. Harmless, hypnotic, occasionally sitting on your head.

Glade-fox

Silver-furred foxes bound by a generations-old starfruit treaty with Talen. Clever, entitled, beloved.

Starfruit

Glowing fruit of the Glade’s silver trees. Ripest picks go to the foxes by treaty; the rest to the Luminari. Vesper’s preferred currency.

Star-reading

Talen’s practice of reading omens in the Starwell’s drifting constellations. Tendencies, not prophecy — she will lecture you on the difference.

Constellation marks

The glowing marks on Talen’s skin that brighten near shadow, starlight, or strong emotion. Sense and signal in one; she cannot turn them off.

Captured star

The fragment of the Starfall tipping Talen’s staff — cool to the touch, a focus for her shaping, and a very expensive walking stick.

Elven Courts

The three courts — Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight — that govern Luminari affairs and have each, politely, been declined by Talen. See Elven Courts.

Starlight wisps

Small bright motes drifting through the Glade at night. Nobody knows what they are, including Talen, who takes this as a compliment to the universe.

The Still

The Starwell’s shore at its calmest hour, just before dawn — Talen’s favorite place in any world.

Warden’s Hollow

Talen’s home: a hollowed silver tree containing a kettle, seven volumes of star-names, and a moth.

Little one

Talen’s address for strangers of any age. Endearing or infuriating, depending on the stranger; always meant kindly.

Star-drift

Talen’s unit of time: the slow movement of constellations across the Starwell. Approximately “a while,” measured precisely.
