Abilities
Starlight, wards, and patience — the quiet arsenal of a warden who has never raised her staff in anger.
Starlight shaping
Talen can gather ambient starlight — from the sky, the Starwell, or her own stored reserves — and shape it into light, warmth, and simple forms: lanterns that never go out, bridges of solid moonbeam, a cloak of dusk for hiding. It is beautiful, precise, and almost entirely nonviolent by design.
Warding
Her true mastery. Talen lays rune-lines: slow, patient geometries of light inscribed on stone, bark, and air that turn aside the Umbral Tide and lesser shadows. A warden’s ward doesn’t fight the dark — it persuades the light to stay. Her eastern-border wards have held for centuries.
Star-reading
By studying the drift of constellations reflected in the Starwell’s surface, Talen reads omens and likely futures. It is not prophecy — the stars show tendencies, and she will lecture you at length about the difference if you call it fortune-telling.
The constellation marks
The glowing marks on her skin are both sense and signal: they brighten near the Tide, near strong starlight, and near strong emotion. She cannot turn them off. Enemies find this useful; friends find it endearing; she finds it undignified.
Healing light
Starlight knitted directly into living things knits them back together — slowly. Talen can close wounds and ease fevers, but it costs her own reserves, and she cannot hurry it. “Bodies,” she says, “are also patient. They just don’t know it.”
The staff
Her staff is tipped with a captured star — a literal fragment of the Starfall, cool to the touch. It focuses her shaping, extends her wards’ reach, and serves as a very expensive walking stick. She has never struck anyone with it.
Vesper’s watch
Not exactly an ability, but worth recording: Vesper, her moon-moth, sleeps on her shoulder and wakes at the approach of shadow. An early-warning system with wings.
Limits and costs
- Daylight thins her. Star-magic is weakest under direct sun; Talen does her true work at dusk and night.
- Reserves are finite. Big workings drain the light she carries; an emptied warden is just a tired elf with a stick.
- Wards need maintenance. Every rune-line fades. The vigil never ends — that is the point, and the price.
- She cannot compel. Star-magic persuades, kindles, reveals. It will not dominate a mind or force a heart. Talen considers this a feature, not a bug.
