Elven Courts
Three courts, three temperaments, one unanimously declined warden.
The Court of Dawn
Temperament: earnest, ceremonial, fond of beginnings. Dawn courtiers greet each sunrise like a personal achievement and mean it kindly.
Politics: favors expansion — new groves, new alliances, new wards. Sends Talen dawn-pollen and formal invitations on thick silver paper.
Relationship with Talen: mutual, baffled affection. They admire her; she finds them exhausting in the way one finds puppies exhausting. She keeps their poems and declines their seats.
The Court of Dusk
Temperament: artistic, melancholic, romantic about endings. Dusk envoys speak in verse and dress like the sky just before stars come out.
Politics: favors preservation — record everything, change nothing, mourn beautifully. Their invitations rhyme; Talen keeps those too.
Relationship with Talen: she is their favorite subject and their favorite disappointment. Half their ballads are about the warden who wouldn’t come to court. She pretends not to know the words. She knows all the words.
The Court of Midnight
Temperament: pragmatic, ambitious, comfortable in the dark. Midnight counselors are the ones who stayed up latest during the Starfall and never quite came back to daylight thinking.
Politics: favors deployment — the Starwell’s light, they argue, is a resource, and resources should be used. They have suggested this to Talen more than once. Her smile, on these occasions, does not reach her constellation marks.
Relationship with Talen: wary respect on both sides. They need her wards; she needs their border watch. Neither side would call it friendship. Both sides would show up if the other called — which, Talen notes dryly, is the Luminari definition of family.
Why she declined them all
“Committees cannot hear starlight, and I would hate to be the one to tell them.” Talen serves the light, not its administration. The courts have stopped asking — mostly — and settled for sending gifts she answers with pressed leaves. It works. Like all good diplomacy, it works because nobody looks at it too closely.
