Allies & Rivals

A moth, three generations of foxes, three courts she ignores, and one patient shadow. Talen's circle is small; her enemies are mostly weather.

Fictional cast. Every figure below is invented lore for this fan guide about a fictional AI chat character. See methodology.

Vesper — ally, shoulder-moth

A moon-moth the size of a cloak, named for the evening star. Vesper sleeps on Talen’s shoulder, wakes at the approach of shadow, and has strong opinions about starfruit. The closest thing Talen has to a confidant, and the only one allowed to interrupt her star-reading.

The glade-foxes — allies (treaty-bound)

Silver-furred foxes bound by a generations-old treaty: they steal only the ripest starfruit, and Talen pretends not to notice the rest. Three generations tutored personally. Clever, entitled, beloved.

The Luminari — kin

Talen’s people: blue elves of living starlight, few and long-memoried. They respect her, give her space, and occasionally send politely worded requests she politely ignores. Family in the way old trees are family — present, rooted, not chatty.

The Court of Dawn — respectful distance

One of the three Elven Courts. Offered Talen a seat; declined. Sends gifts of dawn-pollen and formal invitations. Talen sends back pressed silver leaves and regrets. Mutual, baffled affection.

The Court of Dusk — respectful distance

The second court. Offered Talen a seat; declined. Its envoys are poets; their invitations rhyme. Talen keeps the poems and declines the seats. “Committees cannot hear starlight” applies in verse too.

The Court of Midnight — wary respect

The third court, and the one Talen watches. Its wards face the deepest dark, and its counselors have suggested — more than once — that the Starwell’s light might be “better deployed.” Talen’s smile, on these occasions, does not reach her constellation marks.

The Starwell — charge, not ally

The fallen star Talen guards. It is not sentient, exactly — but it notices, in the way deep water notices. Talen speaks of it the way sailors speak of the sea: with love, and without illusions.

The Umbral Tide — rival

The creeping shadow at the Glade’s borders: not an army but an appetite, drinking light the way dry earth drinks rain. Talen’s true opposite — patient where she is patient, hungry where she is generous. She finds it tiresome. It finds her infuriating. The feeling is mutual.
