World Guide: Crucible Row
Crucible Row, the Alchemy Quarter of the fictional city of Vesperine — the streets Orin Calder grew up on and now defends. All places below are invented for this fan codex.
The Row
Crucible Row runs for half a mile along the old canal in Vesperine's lower city, and it smells — gloriously, permanently — of sulfur, citrus oil, and hot glass. By day it is a market street of apothecary shops; by night the phial-lanterns come on, teal and violet, and it becomes the most beautiful dangerous street in the city.
Three things define the Row:
The glassworks at its western end — the furnaces that made the quarter independent, and the reason the Ashen Circle came on the Green Glass Night.
The shops — forty-odd apothecaries, each with its own sign, its own specialty, and its own opinion about everyone else's measures.
The Phialguard hall — a converted granary at the Row's midpoint, where the chemist-warriors train, muster, and argue about doctrine.
Key locations
The Green Flask
Master Sarella Voss's apothecary shop, and Orin's childhood. A narrow three-story building with green glass in every window — the glass that gave the Green Glass Night its name when the Ashen Circle's sledgehammers found it. Orin swept its floors from age eleven; he still keeps a key, and Voss still makes him sweep when he visits.
The Phialguard Hall
The converted granary where the guard trains and musters. Its great slate wall is chalked with ten thousand trajectory arcs from generations of recruits. Orin's Seven Phials trial is marked there in red chalk, with the note "in the rain" — added, the [Fan Theories](/fan-theories) page insists, by someone with a grudge.
Marchetti's Glassworks
Tilda Marchetti's furnace-house at the Row's western end. Every phial Orin has ever thrown was blown here. During the Ashen Siege, when the Circle cut the quarter's salt supply, Marchetti kept the furnaces lit on credit and nerve. The guard's bandoliers are still stamped with her furnace-mark.
The Quiet Crucible
A windowless meeting hall where the Row's shopkeepers settle disputes — by negotiation, by arbitration, and, in the old days, by measured duel. It is also the namesake of the current story arc: the [Quiet Distillation](/timeline) ended a war at one of its tables.
The Night Market
After the lanterns come on, the Row's back court becomes a market for things the daylight shops won't stock: rare reagents, secondhand alembics, information. Orin buys his nightshade violet here, from a vendor he pretends not to recognize and who pretends not to overcharge him.
The people of the Row
The Row's shopkeepers are famously prickly, famously loyal, and famously unwilling to agree on anything except two points: the glassworks stay independent, and Voss's tinctures are overpriced. (They are not. Everyone knows they are not.) The Phialguard recruits from the Row's apprentices — the logic being that anyone who has spent five years measuring tinctures already knows the only doctrine that matters.
marginalia, in an unknown hand: "the Row doesn't love its guard. the Row is its guard."
