Fan Theories

Reader theories about the chemist warrior — collected, credited to "the Row's regulars," and honestly labeled as speculation. All theories are about a fictional character.

What this page is. Fan speculation about invented events. None of it is canon — the only canon is the app card ("chemist warrior") — and the codex takes no position except to record the theories accurately.

Theory 1 — The seventh phial is empty

The most popular theory on the Row: the seventh cup's reserve isn't a secret reagent at all — it's empty, kept ready to catch, sample, or improvise. Evidence cited: Orin "going back for the phials" in Scene 4 (two empties mattered more than the crew's cheers), and Holt's marginalia: "the seventh is always the one you didn't throw." Counter-evidence: nobody has ever seen him fill it from nothing.

Theory 2 — The rain was arranged

A stubborn minority insists the rainstorm during Orin's Seven Phials trial was no accident — that Holt (or Voss, or the vitriol eels) arranged it to test him at his worst. Evidence cited: the red-chalk note "in the rain" on the slate wall, in a hand nobody will identify. The codex notes dryly that Vesperine's weather needs no conspirators.

Theory 3 — Vane will come home

The romantic theory: Sable Vane, the Glassjackal, will eventually take the Phialguard's measure chain — that the Night Market scene was a job interview in reverse. Evidence cited: Orin's refusal to finish their duel ("the Row's seen enough funerals"). Counter-evidence: Vane's entire personality.

Theory 4 — The eels know something

The canal's vitriol eels have "never been wrong" — and some readers find that suspicious rather than reassuring. The theory: the eels aren't sensing the water, they're sensing something in the water, and the current arc (the Quiet Distillation) will reveal what. The codex declines to confirm or deny, because the codex is saving it.

marginalia, in Voss's hand: "theories are just tinctures nobody's finished brewing."
