Design Notes
Production notes on how this fictional codex — and its character design — was put together. Honest about what is canon, what is invention, and why.
The design brief
The entire codex is built outward from two words on a character card: "chemist warrior" (verbatim, Vizlings app, Elementria world). The design problem: make both words true at once. The answer became the Phialguard doctrine — measure twice, throw once — which is chemistry's caution fused with a soldier's decisiveness.
Key design decisions
- Teal and violet as signature colors. The reagents needed to be readable at a glance, so each got a color: vitriol teal and nightshade violet for Orin, crimson for his mirror Vane. Every illustration on this site uses that color logic.
- The bandolier, not the sword. A chemist warrior's weapon had to be carried chemistry: seven phials, counted like ammunition and brewed like tinctures.
- The gauntlet as the thesis. The Alembic — brass catalyst gauntlet — is the character in one object: the measuring hand's opposite, the hand that acts after measuring.
- Apothecary first, soldier second. Orin's backstory keeps him an apprentice for the entire first arc, so the warrior is always legible as a grown-up shop boy. Voss's marginalia ("the boy was always the weapon") is the design doc in one line.
- The seventh phial stays mysterious. Deliberately unresolved — the codex's engine for the Fan Theories page.
Visual design of this site
The site's art direction is alchemical laboratory: aged parchment backgrounds, brass instrument accents, bubbling teal-and-violet flask motifs, hand-drawn formula marginalia in the page margins (the .formula notes, in Voss's and Holt's "hands"), and apothecary-bottle dividers — all in pure CSS/SVG, no external assets. Light theme reads as a sunlit workshop; dark theme as the lab at night, lit by flask-glow.
What was not invented
