Orin's rivals: a cold censor, a crimson-coated chemist-mercenary, and a shadowy council chamber

Rivals

The people and powers set against Orin Calder — a censor, a mirror, and an institution. All fictional, invented for this codex.

Censor Marrow — the Ashen Circle

The Ashen Circle's chief negotiator and true believer: industrial alchemy should be consolidated, the independent glassworks are "inefficient," and Crucible Row's freedom is a rounding error. Marrow ordered the Green Glass Night and prosecuted the Ashen Siege — and then sat across the Quiet Crucible table from Orin and signed the peace, because the single unbroken phial on the table made the arithmetic clear. The codex's most dangerous rival, because he never raises his voice.

Sable Vane, the Glassjackal — the mirror

Chemist-mercenary, ex-Phialguard, and everything Orin would be if the doctrine hadn't taken: brilliant with a phial, loyal to the highest bidder, fluent in every art and faithful to none. Vane's crimson reagents are the visual opposite of Orin's teal-and-violet — the codex stages their duels as color arguments. The Night Market offer (Scene 3) is their hinge: triple pay to walk away, met with a purchased bottle of nightshade violet and silence.

The Council of Measures — the institution

Vesperine's weights-and-standards authority, which licenses every apothecary and — in theory — every reagent. The Council keeps a file on Orin (the Gallowglass Etch saw to that) and would dearly love the Phialguard brought under municipal control. It is the rival Orin cannot throw a phial at: patient, legal, and permanently unconvinced that "chemist warrior" is a job description.

marginalia, in Holt's hand: "marrow wants the Row. vane wants the pay. the council wants the paperwork. only one of them scares me."
