World Guide
The universe Mara Kest serves — the Stellar Concord, its worlds, and its wars. All fictional.
The Stellar Concord
The Concord is a federation of several dozen worlds, bound by charter rather than conquest: member worlds keep their governments and send delegates to the Concord Council on Meridian Prime. Its founding promise — no world stands alone — is the sentence Mara Kest has built her life around. The Concord keeps that promise through two instruments: relief convoys, and the StarTeam.
Time is counted in Concord Cycles, dated from the signing of the charter. The present of Mara’s story is Cycle 1221.
Meridian Prime and the Concord Spire
The capital world: a temperate planet of old cities and older universities, ringed by shipyards. Above it hangs the Concord Spire, the StarTeam’s orbital citadel — part academy, part fortress, part lighthouse. Cadets train there; Warden-Captains are named there; and in the Spire’s Hall of Laurels, the names of the fallen are cut into ivory panels that catch the station’s artificial dawn. Mara’s instructors’ notes are in the archive. So is the incident report from the tide-fire.
Aelindra and Caldry Vale
Mara’s homeworld: a coastal planet of harbor towns, fishing fleets, and short-haul skiff pilots. Caldry Vale, on the Meridian Coast, is where she was born — a town that smells of salt and engine oil, where the shanties are loud and the hospitality is louder. The town’s proudest boast is its most reluctant hero: the Warden-Captain who still sends letters home and still can’t cook.
The Dead Lanes and the Schism Wars
Generations before Mara, the Schism Wars tore the Concord’s outer systems apart and swallowed whole star routes — the Dead Lanes — into unmapped space. Mara’s expedition of Cycle 1220 re-charted them, opening twelve systems to relief convoys. The Schism Wars are the Concord’s original wound: the reason the StarTeam exists, the reason the Aegis matters, and the reason Mara’s generation was raised on the sentence no world stands alone.
The Void Covenant
The Concord’s enemy: a loose alliance of raiders, warlords, and breakaway fleets operating beyond the Rimward Veil, united less by ideology than by opposition — to the Concord, to its charter, and increasingly to Mara Kest personally. The Covenant is led, after a fashion, by Dread Admiral Sarek Vane, who has made the Warden-Captain his obsession. Covenant raiders strike at shipping, colonies, and relay stations; the StarTeam’s daily work is standing in their way.
The Rimward Veil
The star-dense, interference-heavy region beyond the Concord’s rimward frontier — where Vane is massing forces as of Cycle 1221, where Kaelis Thorn’s squadron has gone silent, and where the Council’s debated mission would go. No Warden-Captain has ever returned from beyond the Veil. Mara is, characteristically, volunteering.
The Shatter Belt, the Belt of Thorns, Breaker’s Drift
The working geography of Mara’s career: asteroid fields, debris hazards, and ambush country along the Meridian shipping lanes. The Belt of Thorns (first clash with Vane, 1216), the Shatter Belt (Night of Falling Stations, 1218), Breaker’s Drift (the transport rescue, 1211) — each is marked on Ilsa Mere’s charts with a small gold laurel, the cartographer’s equivalent of she was here.
The charter’s promise
No world stands alone. Four words, and the whole of Mara Kest. She has held a burning dock, a breached dome, and a standoff at Vigil’s Rest on the strength of that sentence. Whether the Concord always deserves her faith is a question the StarTeam History page asks honestly. That she has never stopped offering it is why the fleet repeats her creed.
