The language of Mara's universe — every term fictional, every definition invented for this reference.
Aegis of the Warden
Mara’s signature technique: a wide shield of golden energy held over an area — a breached dome, a collapsing dock, evacuees. It braces as well as blocks, distributing force across its span. See Abilities.
Aelindra
Mara’s homeworld, on whose Meridian Coast the harbor town of Caldry Vale stands.
Astrolabe, the brass
Mara’s father’s brass astrolabe, kept on her desk aboard the Dawnwarden. She still plots courses by hand “to remember what the charts are for.”
Belt of Thorns
The asteroid belt where Mara first clashed with Sarek Vane (Cycle 1216), driving off his raider fleet without losing a civilian transport.
Breaker’s Drift
The shipping hazard where Harrow’s flying saved a colony transport (Cycle 1211) — the incident that silenced Mara’s critics over his recruitment.
Caldry Vale
The harbor town on Aelindra’s Meridian Coast where Mara was born (Cycle 1187). Famous for its tide-fire of Cycle 1196 and its shanties, which Mara hums off-key.
Concord Council
The governing body of the Stellar Concord, which names Warden-Captains and sets the StarTeam’s rules of engagement.
Concord Cycles (C.)
The fictional calendar of the Stellar Concord. Mara’s story runs from Cycle 1187 to the present of Cycle 1221.
Concord Spire
The StarTeam’s training citadel in orbit above Meridian Prime, where Mara trained (Cycle 1203–1210).
Dawnflare
Mara’s non-lethal technique: a pulse of blinding, concussive starlight that stuns without permanent harm.
Dawnwarden
Mara’s command: a gold-and-ivory StarTeam cruiser, her flagship since Cycle 1217. See Starship and Tech.
Dead Lanes
Unmapped star routes lost in the Schism Wars, re-charted by Mara’s expedition (Cycle 1220), opening twelve systems to relief convoys.
Dread Admiral
The title of Sarek Vane, warlord of the Void Covenant and Mara’s chief antagonist.
Gale of 1214
The storm season during which Mara earned her officer’s laurel, holding a collapsing orbital dock together with her Aegis.
Hollow Point, Siege of
The Cycle 1217 siege where Mara’s Aegis held a breached colony dome for eleven hours during the evacuation of forty thousand people — the action that made her Warden-Captain.
Ilsa Mere
Scholar-sage of the Dawnwarden; keeper of the star charts. See Team.
Jax Quill
Scout pilot of the Dawnwarden; the youngest crew member. See Team.
Kaelis Thorn
Former StarTeam cadet, Mara’s closest friend, who resigned in Cycle 1208 and reappeared in Cycle 1219 commanding a Covenant-aligned squadron. Mara’s most personal rival. See Allies and Rivals.
Laurel insignia
The gold laurel worn by StarTeam officers; the Warden’s Laurel is awarded at graduation, the officer’s laurel for command.
Mara Kest
Warden-Captain of the StarTeam, commander of the Dawnwarden. Poised, courageous, harbor-bred. The subject of this reference.
Meridian Prime
The capital world of the Stellar Concord.
Night of Falling Stations
The Cycle 1218 battle in the Shatter Belt where Mara turned Vane’s ambush inside out, starstepping between decommissioned relay stations under fire.
Pell Voss
Chief engineer of the Dawnwarden. See Team.
Resonance core
The focus device set into Mara’s aegis bracer, which steadies her channeling of stellar resonance.
Ryn Harrow
Executive officer of the Dawnwarden; reformed smuggler. See Team.
Sarek Vane
Dread Admiral of the Void Covenant; Mara’s chief antagonist. See Allies and Rivals.
Schism Wars
The historical conflict (in-universe) in which the Dead Lanes were lost.
Shatter Belt
The asteroid field where the Night of Falling Stations was fought.
Silent bridge
The Spire’s dreaded command simulation, in which cadets command a crew that cannot answer. Mara’s composure score (Cycle 1207) stood as a record for a decade.
Solar lance
Mara’s signature weapon: a spear of condensed starlight.
Starstep
Mara’s short-range blink through folded space.
StarTeam
The peacekeeping order of the Stellar Concord; its officers are Wardens, its captains Warden-Captains.
Stellar Concord
The fictional federation of worlds Mara serves.
Stellar resonance
The StarTeam’s signature discipline: channeling starlight through the trained body.
Tide-fire
The Cycle 1196 harbor fire at Caldry Vale, where nine-year-old Mara rowed through burning water to rescue a deckhand.
Vigil’s Rest
The standoff (Cycle 1219) where Mara refused to treat Kaelis Thorn’s squadron as hostile combatants; it ended without a shot fired — and without reconciliation.
Void Covenant
The raiders and warlords opposed to the Concord, led by Sarek Vane.
Warden
A commissioned officer of the StarTeam.
Warden-Captain
A StarTeam captain holding independent command. Mara is the youngest in four generations.
Waylight
The patrol frigate where Mara served her Long Patrol (Cycle 1210–1217).
