What the Warden-Captain actually does — notable missions of the Dawnwarden. All fictional.
The Gale of 1214 — orbital dock evacuation
Before she was Warden-Captain, before the Dawnwarden: a storm-season catastrophe at a Meridian orbital dock. Mara, then a junior officer of the Waylight, held her Aegis across a collapsing dock spine for six hours while three thousand workers evacuated. It earned her the officer’s laurel at twenty-four — and taught her the lesson she repeats to every cadet: the shield is the whole job.
Breaker’s Drift (1211) — the transport rescue
A colony transport losing power in a debris field, Covenant raiders closing in. Harrow — then weeks into his improbable new career as a StarTeam pilot — flew the Waylight’s shuttle through the drift while Mara cut the raiders’ grapple lines with her solar lance. No civilian casualties. Harrow’s critics went quiet for exactly one cycle, as previously noted.
The Siege of Hollow Point (1217) — eleven hours
The mission that made her Warden-Captain. A colony dome breached under Covenant bombardment; forty thousand people between the breach and the evacuation ships. Mara held the Aegis across the breach for eleven hours. She does not remember hours nine through eleven. The Spire medics say the resonance should have killed her. The colonists of Hollow Point named their rebuilt central plaza for her. She asked them not to. They did anyway.
The Night of Falling Stations (1218) — the trap, reversed
Vane’s ambush among the decommissioned relay stations of the Shatter Belt: the Dawnwarden lured in, jammers up, raider fleet closing. Mara starstepped between stations under fire, turning the ambush inside out — appearing where the Covenant’s firing solutions said she couldn’t be, until their formation broke. The Covenant lost a third of its raider fleet. Vane, watching from his flagship, reportedly said: “Again.” It is the closest thing to respect he has ever offered her.
The Dead Lanes expedition (1220) — a year of charts
Not a battle: a year-long survey to re-chart the star routes lost in the Schism Wars. Mara kept the ship alive through ion storms, dead relays, and one extremely annoyed stellar phenomenon; Ilsa Mere finished the charts. Twelve systems opened to Concord relief convoys. Mara calls it the most important thing she has ever done. “Nobody remembers the evacuations that charts prevent,” she says. “That’s rather the point.”
Vigil’s Rest (1219) — the standoff
Kaelis Thorn’s squadron, Covenant-aligned, holding a mining colony’s fuel reserves hostage. The Council ordered Mara to treat them as hostile combatants. She refused — and instead parked the Dawnwarden between the squadron and the colony, shields up, weapons cold, and waited. For three days. On the fourth, Kaelis withdrew. No shots fired. No reconciliation either. The Council censured Mara formally and promoted her informally, which is the Concord way of saying don’t do it again, and thank you.
The Rimward Veil patrol (1221–present) — ongoing
Vane is massing forces beyond the Rimward Veil. Kaelis’s squadron has gone silent. The Council is debating a mission no Warden-Captain has ever returned from. The Dawnwarden runs the patrol circuit, and Mara — poised as ever — is readying her crew for whatever the Veil is hiding. The story continues.
