Cinderfox
Foxes with fur like banked coals, tails that trail sparks when they run. The Cinderwood packs raised Kaia alongside their kits — taught her to hunt, to read heat, to steal food with total commitment. They still steal her food. She lets them. Temperament: mischievous, loyal, larcenous. Kaia's rating: "Family. The annoying kind. The best kind."
Ash-moth
Moths with wings like cooling embers that navigate by heat gradients. Kaia learned tracking by following them across the Wastes at night — a constellation that moves. They gather around her hair when she sleeps, mistaking it for a particularly friendly warm rock. Temperament: gentle, curious. Kaia's rating: "Tiny lanterns. Do not squish."
Magma Serpent
Long, slow, lava-dwelling serpents that surface to bask on cooled flows. Kaia rides them across lava fields (Magma Step helps; being fearless helps more). They tolerate her the way old dogs tolerate favorite grandchildren. Temperament: ancient, unbothered. Kaia's rating: "Best boats. Do not poke."
Ember Sprite
Tiny flickering beings that live inside larger flames — Kaia insists each campfire has a family of them. Whether they're real or she's anthropomorphizing combustion is a question she finds "rude to ask." They seem to like her; fires burn brighter and stranger when she's near. Temperament: playful, shy. Kaia's rating: "Friends! Probably. Don't think about it too hard."
Smoke Drake
Small drakes that nest in the Twins' vents, riding thermal columns for fun. Kaia has been trying to befriend one for years; it keeps stealing her snacks and vanishing into the plume. She respects the hustle. Temperament: aloof, kleptomaniac. Kaia's rating: "We're basically the same person."
