Timeline

The in-world chronology, in STC years — "StarTeam Charter," the calendar of this fictional universe. Every date below is invented fan lore.

STC 0 — The StarTeam Charter is signed

Eight founders — scouts, pilots, and relay engineers — sign the StarTeam Charter at Heliopause Station, pledging a volunteer coalition of deep-space explorers who answer to no faction and charge no one for a rescue. The Charter’s first article: “No traveler is left in the dark.”

STC 9 — Amara Cole is born

Born aboard the Kestrel Drift in the tail-wake of Comet Liora, to drift-runner parents Joss and Petra Cole. Her grandmother Yara, the Drift’s cartographer, plots the newborn’s first ephemeris before the week is out — a family tradition.

STC 12 — The night watch

Amara begins taking the night watch on the Drift’s chart-barge, learning to read comet-tail turbulence from the observation spar. Yara’s rule: a chart is a promise about where things will be.

STC 15 — The Long Night

The Drift’s main reactor fails mid-crossing. Fifteen-year-old Amara plots a minimum-fuel drift-run to a pre-surveyed ice field using only comet-light and her grandmother’s drift-compass, and leads the caravan from the lead skiff. The Drift survives. Navigation is never again called a support role on the Kestrel Drift.

STC 21 — The Starlume Astrolabe

Yara Cole gives her granddaughter the family’s navigation instrument: the Starlume Astrolabe, brass and violet glass, etched with six generations of Cole star charts. Amara carries it on every mission for the rest of her life.

STC 24 — The Lantern Twins crossing

Amara runs her first independent deep run: an eleven-week solo crossing of the Lantern Twins, returning with the first complete ephemeris of the twins’ braid cycle and the conviction that comets don’t follow roads — they are the road.

STC 27 — The Cole Passage

After two years studying every partial chart of the Veil Nebula, Amara threads it in a borrowed skiff, reading the gas pressure fronts the way she once read Liora’s tail. She emerges with a complete navigable lane — the Cole Passage — hands the charts to the StarTeam for free, and is recruited on the spot by Commander Elias Venn.

STC 30 — First Navigator of the Meridian

Amara is named First Navigator of the StarTeam scout starship Meridian, the fastest deep-range hull in the fleet. Her uniform’s embroidered charts begin their long growth.

STC 32 — First contact at Cold Ember

Amara leads the navigation team for first contact with the Driftborn deep clans at Cold Ember, a comet the clans consider sacred. Her Driftborn birth and fluent tail-reading do what diplomacy could not: the clans share their private ephemerides.

STC 34 — Discovery of the Comet Road

During the Vesper’s Tear survey, Amara recognizes the pattern: long-period comets across the Shattered Reach whose perihelia synchronize once a generation into a navigable current. She proves it, flies it, and names it the Comet Road. The crossing of the Reach drops from years to weeks. The map of the known universe is redrawn — and the Umbral Combine loses its monopoly on the slow lanes overnight.

STC 35 — The Umbral blockade

The Combine blockades the Outer Relay in retaliation. Amara performs the first combat void-skip in StarTeam history — a blind jump across an uncharted gap — to run the blockade with medical supplies. The Combine puts a price on her charts. She publishes them instead.

STC 37 — The Silent Relay rescue

With the Silent Relay listening post cut off and its crew of forty stranded, Amara runs the Cole Passage under blockade conditions and gets the evacuation ships through. All forty come home. The mission enters the StarTeam academy curriculum as the textbook example of navigation under fire.

STC 39 — An apprentice

Neris Sen, a junior scout with raw star-sense and no training, becomes Amara’s apprentice. Amara’s first lesson is her grandmother’s: the stars are not a map; they are a promise.

STC 41 — The Battle of the Shattered Reach, and the truce

Open conflict erupts over control of the Comet Road. Amara negotiates the Driftborn truce, convincing every faction that the Road belongs to no one and every traveler. The Comet Road becomes neutral water — the one chart the whole universe shares.

STC 44 — The present

The Second Comet Road expedition — a full survey of the Road’s far terminus — is being planned. The Umbral Combine is still watching. Amara’s coat carries forty-one embroidered charts. Somewhere past the Reach, the comets are aligning again.
